Lady Gaga is a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment world, and with her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, expect her to take her talents to the next level. The singer/songwriter and actress has taken the world by storm and throughout her glorious career, she has established herself as one of the best to ever do it. Of course, any of us familiar with pop music at all knows that Lady Gaga is responsible for hit after hit throughout the last two decades. In addition to her highly acclaimed music career, Gaga has managed to translate her talents to movie theaters.
Gaga has graced us with some outstanding acting performances in film and TV including American Horror Story: Hotel and the films A Star Is Born and House of Gucci. However, all the buzz going around right now has to do with her upcoming role as Harley Quinn in the highly-anticipated Joker: Folie à Deux. Gaga is a master at finding a balance and mixture between her music and her acting. So, here are the Lady Gaga music videos that we think really embody her role as Harley Quinn.
7 LoveGame
Harley Quinn is silly. She can be manipulative and conniving if she wants to be. So, why not play some games? Lady Gaga’s song “LoveGame” came out in 2008, and the accompanying video is very much Harley Quinn-coded. The enticing that Gaga does in this video to portray a sort of “game” and having someone in the palm of your hand is one of the more entertaining characteristics of one Harley Quinn.
6 Edge of Glory
Harley Quinn is very much a tragic character that gets too caught up in an obsession to reach her full potential. Although the world could easily classify her as a villain, we weirdly end up rooting for her anyway. “Edge of Glory” showcases the part of Harley Quinn’s character that we feel sympathy for, the part of her that we admire. The visuals created in the video capture the essence of DC’s Suicide Squad. The dimly lit streets, neon lighting, and the star Gaga/Quinn front and center.
5 Bad Romance
Seeing Harley Quinn and Joker is like sitting in the front row of a “Toxic Relationship 101” lecture. Those two, however “perfect” they may be for each other, are a “Bad Romance.” Lady Gaga’s music video for “Bad Romance” has her dressed in all sorts of wild and campy outfits performing unique, artistic, and untamed dance numbers throughout. Many of Gaga’s earlier music videos are just in a category all on their own. This one in particular, visually, exudes the same kind of glamorous chaos that lives in Harley Quinn’s brain.
4 Poker Face
The visual and design connection between Harley Quinn’s character portrayals and a deck of cards is no accident. Therefore, how could we possibly leave out “Poker Face” from this list? “Poker Face” is one of Gaga’s most-known songs and the video is almost just as iconic. Much the Harley Quinn’s character, the “Poker Face” video is littered with energy and a hint of a dark side.
3 Paparazzi
The “Paparazzi” music video is glamorous, gory, shocking, and obviously entertaining. Harley Quinn’s character is partially attached to her crazed obsession with serving Joker. If it is out of love or not, she is completely there for him no matter how vicious and nasty she has to be. This video, in some ways, really captures the harsh reality of that aspect of her character.
2 Marry The Night
“Marry The Night” is the video and song that could be a sort of motivational anthem for a character like Harley Quinn. The “Marry The Night” music video is dark and twisted as much as it is charming. The video takes on a life of its own and has its own entire plot to it. From a mental institute to fires in the streets that strangely resemble scenes from Joker, “Marry The Night” lyrically and visually showcases Lady Gaga’s ability to fit into the iconic role even years before it was in the realm of being made. Her artistic performance as a musician and performer, especially in this video, could not be more Harley Quinn if it tried.
1 Applause
If any music project of Gaga’s comes to our minds when we think about her as Harley Quinn, it would have to be “Applause.” Gaga released the music video for her single “Applause” in 2013. The song itself is one of Gaga’s most recognizable and was definitely a hit in the realm of pop music. Well, the music video screams Harley Quinn. The visuals are incredibly theatrical, somewhat erratic, and unhinged (much like the beloved character herself). The iconic shots of Gaga in white face paint and colors smeared on her eyes and mouth feel like Harley Quinn in an alternate dimension.
