A sequel to I Am Legend is currently in development, and another star from the original is hoping to get involved with the follow-up film. What’s known about the sequel at this point is that Will Smith will return, reprising the role he played in the first installment, with Michael B. Jordan serving as his co-star. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original with Mark Protosevich, is also back to work on the screenplay for I Am Legend 2.
In a new interview with Collider, the potentiality of a return was addressed by Alice Braga. Braga noted her excitement about the sequel happening, admitting she was very surprised as it wasn’t something she ever expected. With that said, Braga also made it clear that she’s up for returning in I Am Legend 2 to reunite with Smith and Goldsman if there’s a place for her to return in the sequel. As Braga explains:
“How surprised? I was super surprised and very curious. I was almost jumping on the phone and saying, ‘Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it?’ I’m a huge a Akiva fan, I think he’s such a wonderful writer, and he basically was the first writer that I got to see the [work part] close from coming to the US. It was my first American film, I was very excited to hear that they were continuing with the movie. I hope they do! I don’t know where they are with it, but I hope they do.”
Braga further commented on how much she has grown as a performer since appearing in the first film, and she’d be heading into the sequel with much more experience, bringing something new to the same role this time around. In any case, she’s going to be holidng out hope to get the call, especially as such a big fan of Goldsman.
“I hope [I get to return]! Because it was such a joy to work with them. And also, it’s interesting because I was 23 when I did the film. It’s been such a long time ago, and I did so much work afterward. I think I grew as an actress, as a woman, and as everything, so it would be nice to revisit that material, that team, to reunite with Akiva who is a screenwriter that I deeply admire.”
I Am Legend 2 Will Retcon the Original Film’s Theatrical Ending
The first film saw Braga playing Anna, an immune human survivor who’d been traveling with a young boy, Ethan (Charlie Tahan). I Am Legend‘s theatrical cut ends with Smith’s character, Neville, giving the cure to Anna before sacrificing himself. An alternate ending, which was available to watch on the physical release, Neville instead abandons his research and leaves the area with Anna and Ethan, having survived. Goldsman has confirmed that I Am Legend 2 will follow the alternate ending, which is how Smith will return as an alive-and-well Neville in the sequel.
I Am Legend 2 doesn’t yet have a release date.
