Christopher Plummer’s final performance is coming to digital release! According to Variety, the Oscar-winning actor will be playing Rizzo in the upcoming animated epic, Heroes of the Golden Mask. The trailer and description can be viewed below.
Charlie, a wise-cracking, homeless, American orphan is magically transported to the ancient Chinese kingdom of Sanxingdui, where a colorful team of superheroes need his help to defend the city from a brutal conqueror. Charlie joins the heroes, and secretly schemes to steal the priceless golden masks that grant them their powers.
Heroes of the Golden Mask is directed by Sean O’Reilly, who will also be voicing the role of Thurman. Joining O’Reilly and Plummer are Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Kunyi, Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille) as Aesop, Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Wish Dragon) as Li, Byron Mann (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Jiahao, Keifer O’Reilly(The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) as Charlie, and Osric Chau (CW’s The Flash)as Zhu. The film is a joint production of Arcana Studios, CG Bros. Entertainment, and Golden Image Cultural Communication Inc.
O’Reilly’s Arcana Studio is Canada’s largest publisher of comics and graphic novels. O’Reilly formed the studio in 2004 by writing and publishing the comic book series, Kade. Artist Eduardo Garcia provided the drawing and coloring. Arcana Studio’s success lead to the opening of their animation division in 2014 with The Clockwork Girl, based on the 2007 comic series of the same name, which was also written by O’Reilly. Heroes of the Golden Mask will be the studio’s ninth original film and will be released on digital platforms on June 9th.
Christopher Plummer’s Lasting Legacy
Christopher Plummer’s career began on the stage. His professional acting debut was in 1948 with Ottawa’s Stage Society. He would later shift to Broadway, premiering in 1953 in “The Starcross Story”. His jump from stage to screen began in 1958’s Stage Struck, but it was his fourth role that cemented his legacy. In 1965, he played the role of Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music. While the actor initially disliked the film, calling it “awful,” his performance captivated the world and cemented him as a character actor.
Plummer would continue his career on both stage and screen, with many of his performances earning critical acclaim. He earned an Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in 2012’s Beginners. His performance in 1974’s “Cyrano” earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and in 1997 his role in “Barrymore” earned him Best Actor in a Play.
Plummer was also no stranger to the world of voice acting. Plummer voiced such characters as Henri the pigeon and The Duke of Owls in Don Bluth’s animated movies An American Tail and Rock-A-Doodle. He also served as the narrator in the 1990’s made-for-television Madeline movies and series. In 2009 he played Charles Muntz in Pixar’s Academy Award winning film, Up, and the role of #1 in the apocalyptic cult film, 9. Plummer also performed in numerous films from Arcana Studios such as 2015’s Pixies, and their various Howard Lovecraft films.
Christopher Plummer passed away in 2021 at 91, leaving a rich legacy.
