Honkai: Star Rail – Best Character Builds For Yanqing

Using Yanqing’s best build in Honkai: Star Rail is the best strategy to make him the team’s main DPS. The 5-star character is one of the available heroes from the standard banner and can also be obtained from limited-time banners if players lose their 50/50 pull. Yanqing follows Path of The Hunt, much like Honkai: Star Rail’s Seele. This makes Yanqing a specialist in heavy-hitting individual damage, usually fed by a strong CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG distribution and a support character boosting his regular damage output.

Yanqing is an Ice character capable of freezing opponents mid-battle. His skill set is built around intensifying his powers and avoiding getting hit, so any builds for Yanqing should boost Yanqing’s natural attributes. With the proper Light Cone, Relic, and stat distribution, a player can mold Yanqing into one of the best Honkai: Star Rail characters, even if he is not featured in limited-time banners and has a fierce competitor within his The Hunt Path.

Best Light Cones For Yanqing

The best Light Cone for Yanqing’s character build boosts his attacking powers, ideally through ATK, DMG, or CRIT increases. Of course, the Light Cone must also be in The Hunt category, as equipping one from a different Path will not activate its Superimposed ability, which is the most important part of the weapon. There are, luckily, many strong options for Yanqing to wield in both the 5-star and 4-star tiers. According to the character’s page on Genshin.gg, the best Light Cone for Yanqing in Honkai: Star Rail is Sleep Like The Dead.

The 5-star Light Cone in Honkai: Star Rail that features Yanqing sleeping on General Jing Yuan’s shoulder has a great base ATK stat (582 at level 80), while its DEF (463 at level 80) and HP stats (1058 at level 80) are also impressive. Its ability is what makes it shine, however. The Superimposed skill increases the user’s CRIT DMG by 32%, which makes it much easier to build the CRIT distribution in Yanqing’s build.

Additionally, when the user strikes with a Basic Attack or Skill that does not land a CRIT Hit, their CRIT Rate will be boosted by 40% for one turn – an effect that can be triggered once every three turns. This makes it a very strong Light Cone to have, as it will ensure Yanqing is landing CRIT Hits every so often.

Another useful Light Cone for Yanqing is Seele’s signature In The Night. The 5-star Light Cone, which can only be obtained through limited-time banners in the gacha system, is tailor-made for Seele but also fits Yanqing’s build in Honkai: Star Rail as it boosts a Hunt character’s powers. It shares the same stats as Sleep Like The Dead, but its Superimposed ability is quite different. By equipping it, the user gets a 12% CRIT Rate bump, which also helps with CRIT stat distribution.

On top of that, for every 10 SPD that exceeds 100, the Light Cone increases the user’s Basic ATK and Skill DMG BY 6% and the CRIT DMG of their Ultimate by 8%, up to eight times. So this is a fantastic weapon for Yanqing, even if he is notably slower than Seele.

Reaching a simple 120 or 130 SPD will significantly increase Yanqing’s overall damage output. If players can go higher, that is recommended for using In The Night.

If players are looking for a F2P (free-to-play) 5-star Light Cone for Yanqing’s build, they can use Cruising In The Stellar Sea. This weapon can be bought in Herta’s Shop for eight Herta Bonds in Honkai: Star Rail, which makes it relatively easy to obtain. Its stats match the other two previously mentioned 5-star Hunt competitors, but its Superimposed skill is less effective. It grants an 8% CRIT Rate increase and further increases the stat against enemies with HP less or equal to 50% by an additional 8%.

When the user defeats an opponent, their ATK is boosted by 20% for two turns. This Superimposed skill is slightly worse than the previous Light Cones, but it is still a strong option for Yanqing. Its F2P status is also a boon for players who weren’t lucky with the gacha system. In the table below, you can check Yanqing’s complete build, including the best Light Cones, Relics, stats, and more:

Best Build For Yanqing

Light Cone

  1. Sleep Like The Dead (Best 5-star)
  2. In The Night (Best 5-star for SPD build)
  3. Cruising In The Stellar Sea (F2P 5-star)
  4. Swordplay (Best 4-star)
  5. Only Silence Remains (4-star substitute)

Relic & Ornament Set

  1. Hunter of Glacial Forest (4 Relic pieces) / Inert Salsotto (2 Ornament pieces – CRIT Rate) or Celestial Differentiator (2 Ornament pieces – CRIT DMG)
  2. Hunter of Glacial Forest (4 Relic pieces) / Space Sealing Station (2 Ornament pieces for SPD build)
  3. Musketeer of Wild Wheat (4 Relic pieces, exclusively for early-game)

Stat Priority

  1. CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG
  2. ATK
  3. Ice DMG
  4. SPD (can be more of a priority if using an SPD build)

Skill Priority

  1. Ultimate
  2. Talent
  3. Skill
  4. Basic Attack

If players do not have 5-star Hunt Light Cones at their disposal in Honkai: Star Rail and choose to use their Herta Bonds to buy another weapon, there are still viable 4-star options to give to Yanqing. Sushang’s Swordplay is a good choice, as it has a decent ATK stat (476 at level 80), and its skill sees the user get an 8% DMG increase every time they strike the same target, up to five times.

The Swordplay Light Cone is particularly good when facing stronger foes, like bosses, which require multiple hits before being taken down.

Another solid 4-star option for Yanqing’s build in Honkai: Star Rail is Dan Heng’s Only Silence Remains. The Light Cone shares the same stats as Swordplay, but its effect is very different. By equipping it, the user gets a 16% ATK increase, and if there are two or fewer opponents in battle, they get a 12% CRIT Rate boost.

Best Relics & Ornaments For Yanqing

Honkai Star Rail's Yanqing stands in Xianzhou Luofu. To the left is a piece from the Hunter of Glacial Forest Relic set and, to the right, is a piece from the Celestial Differentiator Ornament set.

Aside from a good Light Cone, players must concern themselves with the proper Relic and Ornament sets to unlock Yanqing’s full potential in Honkai: Star Rail. The absolute best Relic set for Yanqing is Hunter of Glacial Forest. Its two-piece bonus sees the user get a 10% Ice DMG increase, which is perfect for the Yanqing. Additionally, the four-piece bonus grants a 25% CRIT DMG booster after the wearer uses their Ultimate ability for two turns. There is, currently, no better Relic set for Yanqing’s build.

If players are looking for an early-game Relic substitute for Yanqing, they can use Musketeer of Wild Wheat. However, that is only recommended if players do not have access to Hunter of Glacial Forest.

Though the Relic set is not so flexible, players have more options when it comes to Planar Ornaments. If players are looking to upgrade Yanqing’s CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG distribution, the best choice is Inert Salsotto. Its two-piece bonus increases CRIT Rate by 8%, and if his total CRIT Rate is at 50% or above, his Ultimate and follow-up ATK DMG are increased by 15%. This perfectly matches Yanqing’s abilities, which can see the use of a follow-up strike.

A CRIT DMG alternative to Inert Salsotto is Celestial Differentiator. This Ornament set grants a 16% CRIT DMG boost, and if their CRIT DMG is at 120% or higher, they get an extra 60% CRIT Rate until the end of their first attack.

If players are looking to boost the SPD stat in Yanqing’s Honkai: Star Rail build, perhaps to cater to In The Night’s Superimposed skill, the choice is Space Sealing Station. Its two-piece bonus grants a 12% ATK increase but, most importantly, increases their ATK by an extra 12% if the user reaches or surpasses 120 SPD.

It is an excellent Ornament option for a quicker DPS on the field that sees that SPD reverted into damage output.

Players farming for the Relics and Ornaments for Yanqing should consider saving those with stats that are traditionally the best for DPS characters. In Yanqing’s case, the best stats are a strong and high CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG distribution, followed by ATK, Ice DMG, and SPD.

If players are leaning into the In The Night and Space Sealing Station combination, they can throw SPD higher up on the list, which will eventually boost his overall damage output.

Skill Priority For Yanqing

Honkai Star Rail's Yanqing uses his Ultimate, slicing his ice swords against an opponent.

When upgrading Traces in Yanqing’s build, the main priority should be his Ultimate. This ability increases his CRIT Rate and, if the Soulsteel Sync buff is active, his CRIT DMG. Additionally, it deals heavy-hitting Ice DMG to the target, making it necessary in his build. Following that, players should prioritize his Talent, which will make Yanqing less susceptible to being targeted by opponents, grant him multiple buffs, and even the chance of a follow-up ATK when the Soulsteel Sync effect is active.

The next priority should be Yanqing’s Skill, as this is the Trace that will activate the Soulsteel Sync buff, which is necessary for the main effects present in his Ultimate and Talent. Lastly, his Basic Attack should be increased. While he will eventually be required to use his Basic Attack, this is not as important as the rest of his abilities.

Although there is a skill priority for Yanqing’s build in Honkai: Star Rail, players should try to max out the character’s Traces as they level him up and unlock new nodes in his skill tree.

Despite having multiple approaches to building him, Yanqing is a fairly easy character to round out. He is not as strong as Seele, but he is one of the best Hunt heroes to use at launch and one of the best substitutes for Dan Heng. Honkai: Star Rail players that do eventually pull him should consider optimizing him as he can be a valuable asset in a team comp.
