The director behind the upcoming action outing Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Christopher McQuarrie, has revealed some intriguing details regarding the sequel. Including who the villain will be and how Marvel star Hayley Atwell will play into proceedings. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, who have also released a new image from the Mission: Impossible follow-up, McQuarrie has described the character played by Titans star Esai Morales as “a ghost” from Ethan Hunt’s past.
“I can tell you that he’s definitely the antagonist in our story, or rather he is one of the antagonists in our story. He’s something of an enigma. You discover more about him over the course of the two movies. There’s definitely more to him than meets the eye and he’s something of a ghost of the past.”
The plot for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One largely remains a mystery at present, meaning that such descriptions could offer clues regarding what exactly the action movie will involve. What we can assume is that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will find Hunt once again running, running, and running some more to save the world and will throw Cruise into “the biggest stunt in cinema history,” with both Dead Reckoning Part One and Dead Reckoning Part Two being planned as the two-part finale of the franchise.
Captain America Star Hayley Atwell Joins Tom Cruise for the Latest Mission: Impossible
Alongside Esai Morales, another new face being added to the latest Mission: Impossible is Captain America and Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell. And much like Morales, her role also remains a major mystery. Continuing his chat with EW, McQuarrie keeps coy when discussing Atwell’s character, Grace, saying…
“The less I tell you about Hayley Atwell, the better. Hayley represents a stranger in a strange land — she’s somebody who does not come from this world, she’s not a spy, she’s not an agent. If anything, she’s an agent of chaos, and is something of a random element that’s thrown into this story.”
Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One finds the likes of Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Frederick Schmidt, reprising their roles from various installments in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The sequel will also see Henry Czerny reprise the role of Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF who was last seen in the very first Mission: Impossible way back in 1996.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will also throw a bunch of new faces into the action, including Marvel stars Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, as well as Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is scheduled for release in the United States on July 12, 2023, by Paramount Pictures. A further sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is set to be released on June 28, 2024.
