A new batch of character posters for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny put the spotlight on Harrison Ford’s comeback as the iconic adventurer alongside the rest of the supporting cast, including Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s goddaughter and Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen as the villain of the piece. Released via social media, the posters have arrived to remind audiences that it’s now just under a month before Harrison Ford’s swansong is released in theaters. Check out the new posters for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny below.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will drop audiences in 1969 and finds American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones living against the backdrop of the Space Race. Jones is uneasy over the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help beat the Soviet Union in the competition to make it to space. His goddaughter, Helena Shaw, accompanies him on his journey. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller, a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program, wishes to make the world into a better place as he sees fit.
Directed by James Mangold, who has co-written the sequel alongside Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.
The Response to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Has Been Mixed
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny made its debut at the recent 76th Cannes Film Festival and, sadly, the response has been rather mixed. The Indiana Jones sequel, which marks Harrison Ford’s last time portraying the beloved character, currently sits at 49% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes based on 45 reviews. “Although there’s a nostalgic rush in seeing Harrison Ford back in action, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a largely unnecessary franchise finale,” the critic’s consensus reads.
“This is a big, bombastic movie that goes through the motions but never finds much joy in the process, despite John Williams’ hard-working score continuously pushing our nostalgia buttons and trying to convince us we’re on a wild ride,” THR’s David Rooney said of the sequel.
But it’s not all bad, with Collider’s Therese Lacson finding it to be a major improvement on previous Indy outing, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; “It’s a vast step up from the muddled mess of Crystal Skull, and while it’s not perfect, with its uneven storytelling, it’s not a bad end for our favorite archaeologist-professor-adventurer.”
Despite these early reactions, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently suggested that the Indiana Jones franchise could continue without either Harrison Ford of his titular hero. “It’s Harrison’s last entry. That’s how we look at the Indy franchise,” she said, hinting at further adventures set within the world of Indiana Jones. “I mean, truthfully, right now, if we were to do anything, it might be in series television down the road, but we’re not doing anything to replace Indiana Jones. This is it.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 30, 2023.
