James Gunn Wants You to See Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in ScreenX

James Gunn‘s name has been on the collective tongues of the entertainment industry as of late, having been recently hired as the head of DC studios alongside Peter Safran. On the other end of the superhero spectrum, over in the colorful MCU, Gunn has recently released his final Marvel film (at least for now), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film is getting rave reviews and evoking a wide range of emotions as arguably one of the most powerful films in the MCU.

Gunn has had astounding success, and it’s safe to say that much of it is owed to his extreme passion for films and his unique perspective as a kind of anomaly in the studio system. Gunn grew his movie career by contributing to grotesque and fun little films with Troma Entertainment, including his script for Tromeo and Juliet, before diving into a diverse range of odd projects. From Troma, he wrote the weird, R-rated superhero spoof The Specials, the remake of Dawn of the Dead, and the live-action Scooby-Doo films before the one-two punch of his brilliant films as a director, Slither and Super.

It’s a somewhat odd career for someone at the center of cinema these days, but every project is propelled by Gunn’s cinephilia and his enjoyment of big, fun, wild cinematic experiences. So it makes sense that Gunn would be so into ScreenX and the theatrical experience it creates, and that he would want people to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 within the incredible spectacle that is ScreenX. You can hear what he had to say below.

James Gunn Hypes ScreenX for Seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 3

ScreenX is a unique new cinematic experience that, like IMAX, has to be formatted with the film either while shooting or in post-production through converting. The result is a massive, immersive experience with panoramic visuals that extend the film across three screens that cover 270 degrees of your surroundings.

“I really think ScreenX may be the future of cinema,” Gunn said about the technology in this exclusive video. “I think it’s great to have something that really surrounds you in a real way. We’ve had sounds surround us in movie theaters, hearing it from different directions, so why not broaden out what we’re seeing on the screen, too? Make us feel like we’re really in that environment, and completely immerse ourselves in that screen?”

The new MCU movie is hardly the first to be paired with ScreenX; it’s also been used for the box office brilliance of Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther. The aerial scenes in the former and the battle scenes in the latter were a sight to see in ScreenX, and may have prompted Gunn to give it a try for his big blast of a final Marvel movie.

“What I’m most excited about with ScreenX is a lot of our sets and big scenes,” explained Gunn. “We have this wonderful set design by Beth Nickel, like when you go into the ‘Orgascope,’ which is this gigantic satellite that’s grown from organic matter. And I think the outer space stuff should be super cool, jumping out in their different colored astronaut suits. I think ScreenX is perfect for that.”

Anyone who is interested in truly experiencing Gunn’s gigantuan final outing at Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, should seek out a ScreenX screening of the film. Films can take you to entirely news worlds, but the theater itself is the best vessel, and ScreenX is a sturdy and state-of-the-art choice.
