Judge Judy Sheindlin is getting comfortable at Amazon Freevee. After a legendary run on broadcast television, Sheindlin made the move over to streaming by debuting her courtroom show Judy Justice on the free streaming service Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) in 2021. The new series essentially serves as a spinoff of the TV show Judge Judy, which saw the famous judge presiding over cases on television from 1996 to 2021. For its first seaosn, the show won a Daytime Emmy Award, finding instant success and garnering a renewal for season 2.
Now, Variety reports that Judy Justice has just scored a 2-season renewal at Amazon Freevee. This comes as Judy Justice remains the No. 1 original program on the streaming service, garnering more than 150 million hours watched by viewers. Additionally, Sheindlin will expand her work with the streamer, as it’s also been announced that she’ll be featured in a new docuseries for Freevee dubbed Justice on Trial.
“How shall I describe my feelings about the renewal of ‘Judy Justice’ on Amazon Freevee? Gratifying, certainly. Grateful, of course,” Judge Sheindlin said in a statement. “In exploring the continued success of the program, I do believe that people long to see old-fashion justice administered with an even hand. A little humor doesn’t hurt. I intend to deliver both for as long as I’m able.”
On her new docuseries, the judge added, “Justice on Trial explores, through reenactment, some of the most famous and infamous cases in this country and their impact on every American. There has never been a program like it. It is smart and compelling TV.”
Justice on Trial is said to put a focus on the American justice system using actual testimony and reenactments from real-life court transcripts. Various topics will be covered, from Supreme Court rulings to the many debates on both sides that can be heard in the courtroom.
Judge Judy Has Found a New Home
Judy Justice consists of a format very similar to Judge Judy, but there are some new faces standing by in the courtroom to help her out. In the show, she’s joined by retire L.A. probation officer Kevin Rasco, court reporter Whitney Kumar, and law clerk Sarah Rose.
Petri Hawkins Byrd, who appeared as the bailiff throughout the run of Judge Judy on television, has said he felt offended he wasn’t asked to return for Judy Justice. However, Sheindlin has since reached out to Byrd and helped make things right. It was later announced that Byrd would be part of the separate Amazon Freevee courtroom series Tribunal, which also features former Hot Bench judges Tanya Acker and Patricia DiMango. Sheindlin produces the show, which also includes her son, former D.A. Adam Levy.
There’s more to come, as you can stream Judy Justice on Amazon Freevee. The show is currently in its second season with new episodes premiering every weekday through June 9, 2023. All past episodes can be streamed.
