Martin Scorsese Is Making Another Movie About Jesus Because The Pope Asked for It

As he prepares for the release of his new movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese is already thinking about his next big film project.

The director has one of the widest and most varied careers in all of Hollywood. Although most identify him with gangster cinema and portraits of the darkness and dirt of New York, the reality is that he has made all kinds of films with different stories, including religious dramas, such as The Last Temptation of Christ.

Now, Scorsese wants to dive into that theme again at the request of none other than the Pope, as he revealed in an interview with La Civiltà Cattolica (via Variety):

“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I’m about to start making it.”

Released in 1988, The Last Temptation of Christ tells the life of Jesus following the gospels, although it obviously modifies several events, especially after the crucifixion. The film starred Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Verna Bloom, and Barbara Hershey.

Religion has always been an important part in Scorsese’s filmography, even in stories that had nothing to do with it. So for the director to tackle this kind of movie directly might not be surprising to his fans.

For now, no further details have been shared about the director’s next project, since he is mainly focused on promoting his upcoming movie, Killers of the Flower Moon.

Based on the nonfiction novel Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, the story is set in the 1920s and centers on members of the Native American tribe of Osage County, in Oklahoma, who are murdered after they discover that there is oil on their land, for which the FBI begins an exhaustive investigation.

After its debut in Cannes, where the film pleasantly surprised the critics, it is expected to be released in theaters in October of this year, and it is already shaping up to be one of the great candidates for the awards season.

Killers of the Flower Moon reunites the director with two of his favorite actors, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, as local businessman William Hale and his nephew Ernest Burkhart. They are joined by Jesse Plemons as FBI Agent Tom White.

The cast is completed by Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelimi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbot Jr. Pat Healy, Scott Shepard, Jason Isbell, Stugill Simpson, and Brendan Fraser.

Killers of the Flower Moon is produced by Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+, where the movie will be available after its run in theaters, marking the second collaboration of Scorsese with a streaming platform after releasing The Irishman on Netflix.
