Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release of former prime minister Imran Khan, declaring his arrest earlier this week “invalid” after it sparked nationwide civil unrest.
“Your arrest was invalid so the whole process needs to be backtracked,” Pakistan‘s top judge Umar Ata Bandial told Khan, who has been in custody since Tuesday.
Bandial also asked Khan to issue an appeal to his supporters to remain peaceful, following two days of turmoil in the streets.
After being ousted from power in a no-confidence vote by lawmakers, Khan was faced with multiple corruption charges in Pakistani courts.
His supporters were seen dancing near the court building on Thursday to celebrate his release.
