Silk’s New Costume Is the Perfect Use of Spider-Verse’s Noir Reality

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Silk #1The newest outfit for Marvel heroine Silk is the perfect use of the Spider-Verse‘s tougher Spider-Man Noir reality. Out of all the alternate realities in the fan-favorite Spider-Verse, the Noir reality is perhaps the most interesting. It’s a radical departure from what fans know about Spider-Man as it feels more like a hard-boiled detective story than a superhero tale. This is reflected best through the universe’s hero Spider-Man Noir, who is depicted as a gun-wielding crime solver with his biggest foes being the Nazis during World War II. Everything regarding the Noir universe is much darker, with multiple villains and allies of Spider-Man getting World War II redesigns to fit the change in tone. Now, Silk has entered the Noir-verse and gotten the perfect new outfit to complement her change in surroundings.

In Silk #1 by Emily Kim and Ig Guara, an alternate universe version of Silk is shown in Hollywood during the Golden Age of the industry. It’s clear that this is the Noir-reality based on the use of the “Hollywoodland” sign and the sepia-tone colors that give it a feeling of the U.S. during the 1930s and 1940s. However, it’s quickly shown that Silk’s villains are far more mystical than Spider-Man Noir’s as she takes on a monster that attacks her. She quickly discards her public attire to don her superhero outfit, and it’s undoubtedly one of the coolest looks the Noir universe has to offer.

Silk’s Noir Costume Is A Reflection of ’30s and ’40s Fashion

Silk's Noir Reality Costume

The design of Silk’s new look for the Noir-verse is absolutely incredible. It appears to fit the glitz and glamor of nights out during the time period as she wears a sleek spiderweb dress with a matching black skirt and heels. The arm-length gloves also fit here as a way to not only match the design this outfit is going for, but also code her as a superhero of her time similar to the spandex of heroes in the modern era. The best piece of this outfit, by far, is the spiderweb headpiece that serves as an accessory to tie it all together. This is one of her best new outfits in years, alongside last year’s traditional Korean-inspired costume that gives the character some identity in a world that’s dark and bleak.

Silk Makes Spider-Man Noir’s Detective Role More Supernatural

What’s fascinating about this new take on Silk in the Noir reality is how she differentiates herself from Spider-Man Noir. While Peter is dealing with more traditional villains in New York (with the occasional supervillain to make things interesting) Silk seems to be going up against the supernatural. This story sees her facing what’s called the “Midnight Monster” which has a terrifying looking design. This sets Silk apart from her universe’s Spider-Man because it elevates the stakes to the threats that she faces in her comics like a Korean Witch that looked straight out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s a fun way to give Silk her own identity in this universe while also being a detective herself.

Silk’s new series promises lots of new takes on Cindy Moon’s character and look. The issue ends with her in an Old West getup, and there are hints to other realities including zombies, pirates, dragons, and even space. With these new realities will likely come new outfits for the fan-favorite spider hero. If they’re anything like this costume’s pitch perfect use of the Spider-Verse‘s Noir reality though, it’ll be an incredible new set of looks for Silk as she explores the multiverse.
