Charlie and Emma are the central relationship in The Company You Keep season 1, but the finale demonstrates why they don’t work as a couple. The last episode of the first season features the two coming together to take down Patrick Maguire once and for all. However, the finale also digs deeper into the intricacies of Charlie and Emma’s dynamic and proves that they don’t make sense as a romantic pairing.
From the premiere of The Company You Keep, the chemistry between Milo Ventimiglia’s and Catherine Haena Kim’s characters is undeniable. But as the series continues, the realities of Charlie and Emma’s professions come crashing down on their relationship. He’s a criminal with a heart of gold while she is a CIA agent with trust issues. They come from two different walks of life, and no matter how much they love one another, they can’t escape who they are at their cores. The finale of The Company You Keep further exposes the faults in their relationship because even though Charlie and Emma have changed parts of themselves (he worked alongside the CIA, and she started bending the rules), it still isn’t enough to warrant a rekindled romance.
The Company You Keep Finale Explained Why Charlie And Emma Don’t Work
At the end of the finale of The Company You Keep, Emma pleads for Charlie to stay on as a CIA asset and work with her to root out corruption in the agency. He explains why that couldn’t happen, and in the process, very clearly lays out why they shouldn’t be together. Charlie tells Emma that she is asking him to be something that he isn’t, and they shouldn’t have to change themselves to make their relationship work.
Emma ends up quitting the CIA, and there is a promise that Charlie will help her build a case against the corruption. However, just because Emma no longer has the title of a CIA agent, that doesn’t mean Charlie and Emma’s relationship suddenly works. What Charlie said still rings true — they still have very different views of the world, and love isn’t enough for them. At her core, Emma could never do what Charlie does and vice versa.
Charlie Should Be With Daphne If ABC Renews The Company You Keep
Whereas the finale of The Company You Keep proves that Charlie and Emma will always operate on opposite sides of the law, it also shows why a relationship between Charlie and Daphne could work. Once Charlie starts working closely with Daphne, he is able to break down her walls and there is obvious chemistry between them. They kiss in episode 9, but he’s still hung up on Emma. Following Charlie’s rejection of Emma in the finale, there’s a chance that he and Daphne could see if their connection is real.
If ABC renews The Company You Keep for a second season, the writers would be wise to pair Charlie up with Daphne. Their ideologies are better aligned than Charlie’s and Emma’s, and their chemistry is undeniable. Unfortunately, fans might never see a possible relationship between Charlie and Daphne because it’s unclear if The Company You Keep has a future following the season 1 finale.
