Eric Szmanda addresses another possible CSI: Vegas return for his character. A follow-up to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the series tracks a team of forensic investigators who employ new techniques to analyze evidence and protect the streets of Sin City. CSI: Vegas premiered on CBS back in 2021 and featured several original cast members, including William Petersen and Jorja Fox. Szmanda portrayed Greg Sanders, a main character throughout most of CSI, and while he was revealed to have left the Crime Lab before the events of the sequel, he eventually returned towards the end of season 2.
Szmanda’s time on CSI: Vegas was brief, but the actor is already teasing more appearances down the line. In a recent interview with TV Insider, he reveals that Greg’s future was left uncertain because there is a possibility that he could come back, adding that “nothing’s off the table.” Read Szmanda’s comments regarding Greg’s potential return to CSI: Vegas below:
“Well, I don’t think I’m saying goodbye to Greg. This was left open-ended intentionally. In my conversations with the showrunner, Jason Tracy, they’ve always been very positive. We’ve been in talks about doing this for a while, and for creative reasons and for timing purposes, it could only fit in when it did at the end of this season. But as Jason told me, they love my character and intentionally left it open-ended, and nothing’s off the table. So that combined with the fans’ very overwhelmingly positive reaction to Greg coming back, I think it’s likely that Greg will be back.“
How CSI: Vegas Continues Greg’s Story
Prior to CSI: Vegas, Greg was a Level III investigator, whose name came up in season 2 when Chris Park (Jay Lee) was describing a case to Max Roby (Paula Newsome). He was brought back to cover a night shift and ended up working with the team to help solve a murder from the 1980s. He later expressed interest in rejoining the CSI but, having written a number of books, also considered going back to school to become a professor. In CSI: Vegas season 2, episode 19, Roby put him in touch with someone from Northwestern’s Department of Chemistry.
Whether Greg makes the trip to Chicago remains to be seen, and with CSI: Vegas getting renewed for season 3, the door is open for his potential return. Another star from the original series, Marg Helgenberger, reprised her role as Catherine Willows in season 2 and was the person Greg went to for advice about his career. Because both appearances were well-received, and Szmanda seems to be teasing more of Greg, it will be interesting to see if they reunite in future CSI: Vegas episodes.
With Petersen and Fox exiting CSI: Vegas after season 1, Szmanda’s appearance likely excited fans of the series. If the show continues to explore characters from its predecessor, Greg could be a good addition, along with Helgenberger. Those hoping to possibly see more of Greg Sanders and learn about his career decisions can be sure to keep up with any CSI: Vegas news.
