10 Unanswered Book Questions The Harry Potter Remake Can Answer

Warner Bros’ Harry Potter TV remake has been promised to be a faithful adaptation of the original books, but there are several ways the series could expand on Harry’s story. Any good book leaves some questions unanswered so that audiences can ponder them for years to come. In the case of Harry Potter, fans have debated the nuances of certain mysteries since the books concluded in 2007—and that’s all been part of the fun. However, the upcoming remake provides an opportunity to give definitive answers to at least a few.

Though intended for children and teenagers, the Harry Potter series is full of complicated plot points and moral undertones, making it uniquely delicious to analyze and assess. By the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, most of the questions that carried on from book to book were addressed and resolved—but others were left tantalizingly ambiguous. Of course, providing a concrete answer to each of these would take away that charming mystery that Harry Potter is known for. However, if some of the biggest questions are addressed in the Harry Potter reboot, audiences could walk away with a fresh perspective of Harry’s beloved story.

10 How Quirrell Found Lord Voldemort In Philosopher’s Stone

The final plot twist of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is that Professor Quirinus Quirrell was secretly sharing his body with Lord Voldemort. He told Harry that, in an attempt to finally prove himself, he went looking for the Dark Lord. Quirrell had been successful, but there is a lot to this story that was left untold. At that point, Voldemort had no body, and the entire wizarding world believed him dead. So, how could Quirrell have possibly found him? The answer could undoubtedly make an excellent addition to an expanded story.

9 How Tom Riddle Found The Chamber Of Secrets

Harry learned in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that Lord Voldemort used to go by the name Tom Riddle—which made him the owner of the mysterious diary that the Boy Who Lived had become so obsessed with. This also meant that Riddle was the true heir of Slytherin, something that the child villain found out easily enough once he had discovered his mother had been a member of the Gaunt family. What would have been much trickier was finding the location of the Chamber of Secrets. Harry only found it in Chamber of Secrets because of Moaning Myrtle—so how did Riddle end up beneath the girls’ bathroom?

8 How Voldemort & Nagini Met In Albania

Dumbledore told Harry that he suspected Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, shared a far closer relationship with the Dark Lord than it seemed. Of course, his guess was entirely correct, and the creature wound up being another of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. This was pretty much the extent of the mystery at the time, but Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them added to the story. It was revealed that Nagini used to be a witch who had been cursed to eventually transform into a snake for good. This entirely changed the way audiences saw her, which brought up the question of how she ended up in Voldemort’s service while he hid in Albania.

7 How Peter Pettigrew Helped Voldemort Get A Temporary Body

Until Peter Pettigrew found Voldemort, the Dark Lord had been unable to maintain his own form. He was nothing but a roaming fraction of soul unless he possessed the body of another. However, with his servant’s help, he was able to have a small, baby-like form until the time finally came to use Harry Potter’s blood to fully resurrect his body. The Dark Lord made it clear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that this had much to do with Pettigrew, but he didn’t give specifics. Unfortunately, this might be difficult to explain in the Harry Potter remake as well since J.K. Rowling shared that her editors found it too disturbing to include.

6 How Mad-Eye Moody’s Eye Can See Through The Invisibility Cloak Hallow

Mad Eye Moody Crouch Jr. Under PolyJuice Potion Holding His Wand

Mad-Eye Moody’s electric blue eye is a unique magical artifact in the Harry Potter series since there seem to be few limits to what it can see through. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Barty Crouch Jr was impersonating Moody, he could see through Harry’s Invisibility Cloak, which wasn’t much of a surprise at the time. However, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows revealed that Harry’s cloak was one of the titular Hallows and was the only of its kind to achieve perfect invisibility. If that’s so, then Moody’s eye must have been even more special than it seemed.

5 What Happened To Lord Voldemort’s Body

Voldemort and his flayed soul in Harry Potter

Lord Voldemort’s body is a mystery in several ways. First, it has never been entirely clear why creating Horcruxes would distort his features as much as it did. Then, the Harry Potter books never answered what happened to Voldemort’s first body after his Killing Curse rebounded before the start of Harry Potter. Finally, there is never an explanation for what happened to the Dark Lord’s body after the Battle of Hogwarts. Was it thrown out, or did he receive some kind of gravestone for Death Eaters to visit?

4 What Voldemort Planned To Turn Into A Horcrux When He Murdered Harry Potter

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore explained that Voldemort had intended to use Harry’s murder to create his sixth and final Horcrux (leaving himself with seven total soul fragments). Of course, this didn’t go how the Dark Lord anticipated since his Killing Curse rebounded. Still, it’s curious what item he might have used for this extremely important final Horcrux. Given Voldemort’s twisted version of sentimentality, this item would have been even more valuable than Slytherin’s locket, Ravenclaw’s diadem, or any of the rest. Unfortunately, audiences (and Harry) never found out what it would have been.

3 How Much Dumbledore Really Knew & Planned Throughout Harry Potter

Albus Dumbledore has become something of a controversial character since the conclusion of the Harry Potter books. Though he started as a sage and kindly old man, the reveal of his past in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made it clear that his true self was far darker than that. He was something of a puppet master who made difficult choices for the sake of the greater good. He did his best to make the right choices, but Dumbledore seemed to lie to Harry Potter more than tell him the truth. This begs the question: How much did he know, and how much of Harry’s adventures did he plan?

2 How The Peverell Brothers Really Made The Deathly Hallows

Depiction of the three brothers in Harry Potter

Harry Potter was first introduced to the Deathly Hallows through “The Tale of Three Brothers,” a wizarding fairytale that told of three wizards who made a deal with Death to gain magical objects that would help them cheat him further. Of course, the plot of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows revealed that this wasn’t just a legend. However, Dumbledore told Harry that these three brothers, the Peverells, were likely just talented inventors rather than wizards who had interacted with Death. Though this is now regarded as canon, the question of how they crafted these exceptional items has never been answered.

1 If The Deathly Hallows Really Made Harry Potter Master Of Death

Harry Potter in a forest in Deathly Hallows Part 2

Just as the method of the Deathly Hallows creation was never fully explained in the Harry Potter series, the way they assisted Harry’s final victory against Voldemort isn’t entirely clear. The legend of the Hallows stated that they would make the person who reunited them the Master of Death. However, it was Lily Potter’s sacrifice (again) that allowed Harry to survive Voldemort’s Killing Curse in the Forbidden Forest—not the Hallows. Still, this legend wasn’t included in the Harry Potter series for no reason. It’s possible that Harry already was the Master of Death, which is why he was destined to reunite the Hallows. Ultimately, only the Harry Potter reboot has the chance to definitively answer this once and for all.
