NBC recently axed the sitcom American Auto after two seasons, confirming that no third season is in development. The news was a bit of a surprise, as ratings were only slightly down compared to the first season, and the series has garnered that rare, coveted score of 100% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes. But the powers that be at NBC are changing some things up with the network’s comedy offerings for the 2023-24 season, having recently ordered to series the workplace comedy St. Denis Medical from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer – who also created American Auto. Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez are also both returning for second seasons.
“I really loved this opportunity – everyone on the creative team, the writers, the crew and of course, the ensemble made magic. Lucky me,” series star Ana Gasteyer wrote on Twitter in response to the news.
Along with Gasteyer, the series starred Harriet Dyer (Love Child), Jon Barinholtz (Superstore), Tye White (Greenleaf), Michael Benjamin Washington (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Humphrey Ker (Mythic Quest), and X Mayo (The Good Doctor). The show has also featured notable guest stars including Ryan Reynolds, Andy Richter, Eric Stonestreet, Tom Bergeron, Jim O’Heir, Ian Roberts, and Ike Barinholtz.
Spitzer executive produced American Auto with Aaron Kaplan, Dana Honor, Jeffrey Blitz, Eric Ledgin, and Brian Morewitz. It was produced by Josh Greene, Elena Crevello, Kyle Mack, Scott Printz, and Meg Schave.
American Auto Gets Totaled After Two Seasons
As the series is officially dead, Spitzer has divulged what his plans were for the third season. He posted a rare tweet on Twitter teasing what would have happened in season 3 while thanking everyone who worked on the show as well as the fans, proud of the work that was done on the first two seasons.
“Season 3 of [American Auto] was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there,” Spitzer said. “Thank you so much to our outstanding cast, writers, crew, and fans. Lemme know if anyone wants to buy a Pika.”
“What I will say is that I do believe that arrogance is the dark side of success, right? And I think it will be very fun to play with hubris and to play with overreach,” Gasteyer also said of what she hoped would happen in season 3 prior to the cancelation, per TheWrap. “I mean, without naming names, certainly there are automotive company leaders who have gone to run social media platforms and think that it’s the same thing. So I think sky is the limit for how this will empower her and I think they’ll be able to have fun with that as a result.”
