Alita: Battle Angel star Lana Condor has teased what audiences might see in a sequel, with the actress adding herself to the growing list of those who wish to see Alita: Battle Angel 2 come to fruition. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Condor, who played Alita and Hugo’s friend Koyomi in the first outing, is eager to “explore a lot more” of the cyberpunk world in the possible follow-up.
“When we filmed Alita: Battle Angel, that whole world was so beautiful. I haven’t heard of any plans to continue that storyline, however, that’s seriously been something in my heart that I’m hoping would start up the conversation again. I feel like we can explore a lot more of that world, and obviously the original IP is vast.”
Released back in 2019, directed by Robert Rodriguez, and written by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis, Alita: Battle Angel is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Gunnm and follows a young girl named Alita, a battle cyborg who awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize. She is taken in by Ido, a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past.
Alita: Battle Angel ends with a major tease of things to come, with Alita calling out the technocrat overlord, Nova, played by Edward Norton. Of course, those familiar with the source material will know that the events of the Alita: Battle Angel movie were very much just the beginning.
Alita: Battle Angel 2 Talks Are Now Happening
While Alita: Battle Angel 2 has not yet been officially confirmed, Condor is far from the only original cast member who wants to return, with both lead Rosa Salazar and actor Christoph Waltz also calling for the sequel to get the greenlight. Director Robert Rodriguez has recently confirmed that talks are happening behind the scenes regarding a sequel, with the filmmaker stating, “Yeah, we have been talking about it, so we would love to make one.”
This is far from the first update we’ve gotten surrounding Alita: Battle Angel 2, with producer Jon Landau adding, “There’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we would love to circle back and do a sequel to, and been talking to Robert [Rodriguez] about that and hopefully that comes to fruition.” And that’s without mentioning the blood oath that Rodriguez and writer and producer James Cameron have now taken to get Alita: Battle Angel 2 made.
As for Lana Condor, she can next be seen (or should that be heard) in the animated outing Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. Coming courtesy of DreamWorks, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken follows the titular high school student as she discovers she’s a direct descendant of the warrior kraken queens, who are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 30.
