The Big Bang Theory producer Steve Molaro reveals the Penny scene in the pilot that he regrets the most. As the only original female character in the nerd-centric sitcom, Kaley Cuoco played the role for a total of 12 years. Sadly, the depiction of her character in The Big Bang Theory has been a main source of criticism on the sitcom.
In Jessica Radloff’s The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, even Molaro admits to their mistakes in handling Penny. At one point, he cites one particular moment in The Big Bang Theory pilot that he wishes wasn’t included in the show. Read his full quote below:
“She was the ditzy blonde girl in the pilot, which is one of the things that is not great about [it]. There’s an unfortunate joke about how she’s a vegetarian but she loves steak. I didn’t write the pilot, but those are moments [that] you wish you could undo a little bit of.”
How Big Bang Theory Failed Penny Until The End
Even series co-creator Chuck Lorre has admitted some of his regrets in terms of their approach to Cuoco’s character. Unfortunately, they did little to fix these mistakes during the show’s run. In The Big Bang Theory finale, it was revealed that Penny was pregnant after repeatedly saying that she didn’t want kids. What made this inconsistency worse was that there wasn’t any attempt to explain why she suddenly changed her stance on the matter.
Subsequently, Cuoco revealed that she disagreed with Penny’s The Big Bang Theory finale. She fought for the show to honor her character’s wishes by making her child-free until the end of the sitcom, but sadly, the producers and writers didn’t listen to her. So while it was heartwarming to see Penny and Leonard celebrate the new milestone in their relationship, it’s mired by the circumstances of the situation. Ultimately, it became the most controversial plot in an otherwise well-loved finale.
Unlike Sheldon and Amy’s future, nothing has been revealed about Penny and Leonard’s life post-The Big Bang Theory. The pair haven’t made any proper voice cameos in Young Sheldon. But with the prequel potentially ending after season 7, CBS hopefully makes an effort to rectify their mistakes and offers an update on how the Hofstadters are doing.
