The announcement trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder showed off a plethora of new enemies and creatures Mario and his friends will face in the new adventure coming this fall. The game will offer up a co-op experience for up to four players or Mario can go it alone through this wondrous world. The magic of the Wonder Flower will change the environment in random and chaotic ways and provide an excellent backdrop for the new monsters shown thus far.
During the June 2023 Nintendo Direct event, Super Mario Bros. Wonder was one of the featured announcements alongside several other upcoming Mario remakes and games. The game is set to be released in October 2023, and its trailer gave a quickly moving look at some of the new powers and enemies that players will encounter in this new 2D platforming experience. While none of the new enemies have had official names released, there is a lot that can be gathered from the trailer.
13 Sledge Bro Type Pipe Pusher
This Super Mario Bros. Wonder relative of Hammer Bro and Sledge Bro seems to enjoy pushing pipes around the world. This leaves several open-ended questions such as what is going on underneath the pipes as well as how Daisy appears to have enough upper body strength to push him and the pipe back.
12 Shelled Chipmunk/Beaver Enemy
Whatever this little animal-like creature is, it’s adorably scared of the shell chasing it. Some on the internet appear to be calling it a chipmunk, while others think it is a beaver. Ultimately, it is some kind of tall animal with a shell on its back.
11 Colorful Balloon Fish Creatures
High up in the sky in at least some levels of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, there are colorful flying fish that appear to be inflated balloons. Styled in at least green and pink varieties, they don’t seem to be actively seeking out trouble, although it’s a good bet that they will deflate if jumped off of.
10 Thunder Cloud Variant
This evil-looking dark cloud in Wonder has a lot of similarities to the Thunder Cloud that appeared in several previous Mario Kart games as an item that would shoot lightning at the driver unfortunate enough to pick it up. In the trailer, it doesn’t have a chance to harm Mario or his friends, but it doesn’t appear to be friendly.
9 Missile Bullet Bills
A long, slender missile variety of the traditional Bullet Bill was shown with rainbow-colored smoke trails during a scene in the trailer with a party of colorful Yoshi characters. Though one of them came very close in the trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, none of the missiles struck Yoshi. If it had, it most likely would have caused damage if given the chance.
8 Purple Spiked Swarming Enemies
The Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer showed bouncing swarms of purple spiky balls that act almost like the jumping Cheep Cheeps which have hindered Mario in previous games over areas of water. Due to the clouds that Mario and Yoshi were on, it is assumed that the purple swarm is something that bounces through the air, high up in the sky, but with a similar mechanic.
7 Stacked Green Creatures
Stacked green and yellow enemies in Super Mario Bros. Wonder provide a moving barrier to impede the progress of players. In the trailer, it is shown that the easiest way to efficiently take out all of these angry bird monsters is to do a slam jump on the top one and crash through them all.
6 Underwater Piranha Plants
Although Piranha Plants have been underwater in Mario games of the past, Super Mario Bros. Wonder appears to have a new enemy to fill this role. These black, circular creatures with red and yellow spikes and horns appear to hide within the pipes to catch a player off-guard as they pass by.
5 Rollerskating Koopa Troopas
The turtle-like Koopa Troopas are a classic staple of the Super Mario games, and Wonder adds in a new pink variety of rollerskating Koopas. The new game features a rollerskating version of the Wiggler as well.
4 Spiked Jumping Green Enemies
Very similar to the Spiny, these green spiked creatures appear to crawl along the ground. What truly sets them apart, however, is that they can jump into the air and seem to be keenly aware of where a player is.
3 Stampeding Blue Buffalo
These blue stampeding animals could be inspired by buffalo/bison, or they may be more of a dinosaur-type creature such as Yoshi. They do not seem to mind Mario running along their backs, although it would not be advisable to try to stand in front of them.
2 Purple Hippo Balls
The cartoony, bouncy purple hippos are already a fan favorite for many who witnessed them in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer. They are as fun and silly as any Mario creature could be, and give the added benefit of being like a trampoline for Mario when he jumps off of them.
1 Dark Bowser Jr Like Boss
The only boss fight that appeared in the trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a magical appearing battle between Mario and what looks to be a dark version of Bowser Jr. His face is obscured by a dark and neon-cloudy mouth feature, but overall he seems reminiscent of an alternate reality version of Bowser’s offspring.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder has not given a lot of detailed information, such as the names of the enemies, but the trailer clearly showed that Mario and his friends will be facing off against a whole host of new creatures in this new game. With these additions along with new power-ups such as the Elephant Mario, it should prove to be an exciting game for Mario fans. More information on this 2D platformer is expected to be given later this summer. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is scheduled to be released for the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023.
