The cancelation of Gotham Knights saw yet another DC project on The CW fail to meet its potential, and one person upset to see it come to a premature end was Misha Collins. The actor starred in the show as Harvey Dent, the iconic Batman character who becomes Two-Face, the hideously disfigured villain. With the series being scrapped after just one season, there were many stories left untold, and Collins lamented on his in a Twitter post. He wrote:
“Just got back on the grid after unplugging for a week to hear the news that [Gotham Knights] was canceled by [The CW] and won’t be able to find a new home. I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my ‘villain arc,’ but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart, caring, good group of people.I’m especially proud that our story about fighting the good fight also gave us opportunities to tell diverse and inclusive stories. We need more of that on screen, and while this story may not be going forward, I really believe it helped open that door a little wider for more characters from all backgrounds to shine. Thank you, #BatBrats, for your full-throated support. The show may be ending, but I know this community will keep the light shining against the darkness in the real world. Onward!”
Collins enthusiastically showed off some of the prosthetic work that was being used to transform him into Two-Face back when the show debuted in March. However, it seems that while he was clearly thrilled to be part of the production, it seems that not everyone was on board with the show, and its audience figures were clearly not enough to see it gain one of those very elusive renewals.
Gotham Knights Was the Latest in a Long Line of The CW Casualties.
Over the last year, The CW has been drastically reducing its scripted show content. Gotham Knights’ cancelation sees it join many other DC shows such as Legends of Tomorrow, Naomi and The Flash which have now ended their runs, some much earlier than expected. Along with the cull of the Arrowverse, several other new shows such as Walker: Independence, The Winchesters and Kung-Fu have also bitten the dust in the last few weeks.
Although there are still a handful of popular DC shows such as Superman & Lois on the network, it is clear that fans of scripted shows are really going to have to look elsewhere for their next series as the realignment of the network’s priorities continues.
Meanwhile, those who have stuck with Gotham Knights thus far still have two episodes of the series to come, including tonight’s penultimate episode, “City of Owls”, and the June 27 finale, “Night of the Owls” still to come to round out the series.
