Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars #35 Both the Jedi and the Fallanassi are ancient Force-sensitive groups who have on occasion influenced each other’s Force-wielding abilities throughout Star Wars canon. Now, a new facet of their relationship charting back to the days of the Old Republic has been revealed, confirming a secret purpose with this ancient alliance.
The Fallanassi were a religious order that worshiped the Force, though ‘the Force’ isn’t what they called it. They looked at the Force as more of a cosmic sea through which all things ebb and flow. The Fallanassi called the light side of the Force the ‘White Current’, and the dark side the ‘Dark Tide’. This viewpoint led the Fallanassi to hold a much less battle-focused regard for the Force, something that is clearly shown by their refusal to wield lightsabers. However, that doesn’t mean the Fallanassi disapprove of the lightsabers entirely. In fact, Star Wars’ latest adventure confirms that the Fallanassi actually played a huge role in the Jedi re-acquiring the precious kyber crystals that were bled red by the Sith, and they did this by purifying those crystals for the Jedi.
Star Wars’ Fallanassi Purified Red Kyber Crystals for the Jedi
As shown in an exclusive preview by multiversitycomics.com of Star Wars #35 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov, Luke Skywalker has aligned himself with a Fallanassi woman named Gretta as well as the kyber expert, Dr. Cuata. A few issues prior, Luke Skywalker’s yellow lightsaber was crushed in the hand of a Killdroid, cracking the kyber crystal inside and making the lightsaber nearly unusable. So, as a test, Dr. Cuata gave Luke a red kyber crystal he had in his collection, and he did so to see if Luke could use the light side of the Force to purify it–assuredly to use it in a new lightsaber. Luke had never heard of anything like this before, but Gretta had. Gretta explains that her people, the Fallanassi, would purify bled kyber crystals after the fall of the Sith, allowing the newly cleansed crystals to be used once more by the Jedi.
In the days of the Old Republic, there were thousands of Sith to rival a thriving Jedi Order. The conflict between the two entities ravaged the galaxy, but not more than it did so within the ranks of the Sith specifically. While fighting the Jedi, the Sith would constantly be fighting among themselves, as each of them sought to elevate their own station in the never-ending conquest for more power. Because of this, Darth Bane enacted the Sith Rule of Two, and upon the establishment of that rule, the Sith became all but extinct. This left a great number of red lightsabers without wielders, which all contained kyber crystals that had been bled with the dark side. Rather than simply trashing thousands of kyber crystals, Star Wars fans now know that the Jedi had the help of the Fallanassi to recover those bled crystals.
This act of service was one that meant a great deal to the Jedi due to the fact that they could now use the crystals in their lightsabers once again, but it was also a service to the Force itself. The Fallanassi are servants of the Force and follow its cosmic flow. They seek only to honor its glory with hardly any desire to channel the powers the Force offers (like the Jedi or the Sith). Kyber crystals are conduits of the Force, and whenever they are bled, they are kept in a state of very real, perpetual agony. By purifying them, the Fallanassi are healing the crystals, and by extension, the Force within them. Coincidentally, this act of goodness in honor of the Force was something that was beneficial for the Jedi as well, so the Fallanassi were happy to contribute. Thus, the ancient alliance between Star Wars’ Jedi and Fallanassi for the purpose of purifying red kyber crystals was born.
