At long last, The CW has renewed DC series Superman & Lois for season 4. The Arrowverse-adjacent series stars Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent, aka Superman, and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, putting special focus on the two iconic characters’ roles as parents to their teenage boys. For some time now, the future of Superman & Lois has remained up in the air as The CW makes several sweeping changes.
Now, per Deadline, Superman & Lois season 4 is moving forward at The CW, albeit with some changes. The season will consist of only 10 episodes, and it is likely there will be some budget cuts that could result in a reduced cast. It will be The CW’s last DC show, as freshman series Gotham Knights has been cancelled. Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment for The CW, has expressed his enthusiasm for the show’s return alongside sports drama All American: Homecoming. Check out his statement below:
We are thrilled to bring All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois back to The CW. These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.
Superman & Lois Season 4 Becomes The Arrowverse’s Last Hope
While Hoechlin and Tulloch first made their respective debuts as Clark and Lois on the Arrowverse shows Supergirl and The Flash, showrunner Todd Helbing and Warner Bros. eventually made the decision to give Superman & Lois its own continuity separate from the events of the Arrowverse’s Earth-Prime. This allowed Superman & Lois much greater freedom to explore its own take on the classic DC characters unencumbered by the weight of the Arrowverse’s established continuity. However, with The Flash now finished after its own acclaimed nine-season run, Superman & Lois has become The CW’s last hope for keeping some vestige of the Arrowverse alive.
Recently, Helbing suggested that he would love to see Grant Gustin’s The Flash make an appearance during Superman & Lois season 4, and was equally excited about the prospect of Iris West (Candice Patton) crossing paths with Lois Lane. With the concept of the multiverse already so deeply ingrained in Arrowverse lore, it’s possible for Helbing and his team to feature characters without impacting the show’s own continuity. However, if Helbing does elect to go down this path, it will also be important that he not sacrifice Superman & Lois‘ unique appeal for the mere sake of fan service cameos.
While the show’s established fanbase will be celebrating the confirmation of Superman & Lois season 4, it will be interesting to see whether it will continue any further beyond this. With James Gunn already busy planning his own Superman: Legacy, DC Studios may very well elect to seek greater creative control over the character as they reestablish the Last Son of Krypton on the big screen. Meanwhile, even Superman & Lois‘ shortened season 4 is good news for audiences who are keen to see more of Hoechlin’s blue boy scout.
