Dead by Daylight Redefines the Lore Surrounding the Legion’s Susie

Warning: spoilers ahead for Dead by Daylight #1!Fan assumptions about Dead by Daylight‘s most popular Legion member, Susie, have been completely redefined in their new comic series. The Legion have been among the most popular killers since their release in 2018. While their intense play style is not necessarily loved by players, their unique cosmetics and the lore behind the four members of the gang definitely are. Out of the four though, it’s clear who has won players over the most: Susie. Her shy appearance and reserved description in the Legion’s official lore has led fans to believe that she was drawn into this group by peer pressure. This made her an instant draw as a truly reluctant member of the Legion. However, new information has unveiled that she’s not as innocent as she seems.

Dead by Daylight #1 by Nadia Shammas and Dillon Snook focuses entirely on the bloody origin of the Legion, as the leader of the group, Frank Morrison, arrives in Ormond. For the most part, this first issue follows what has been established in the official lore, and follows the story in the game’s Tome pretty closely with a few adjustments to make the story its own. The group bond over a party, begin getting into mischief together and eventually will become the murderous squad that gets taken by the Entity. However, the biggest change comes on their first big crime together as Susie shows a side of herself that suggests she’s not the angelic innocent fans believed.

Legion’s Susie Takes Pride in Crime

During an epic chase from the police, the teens manage to steal their car. On their way home, they each work to steal the hood ornaments from different vehicles along the way in an effort to bond with one another. Surprisingly, Susie doesn’t just join in – she actually volunteers. She manages to take the lead over Frank, Julie and Joey by proclaiming that “this one’s mine!” If this was the Susie that fans knew, Frank would have offered her the opportunity, to which she would reluctantly agree. Here though, Susie needs far less prompting to break the rules, and decidedly isn’t any kind of emotional hostage to the rest of the group. Susie is depicted as far more willing to transgress than the game’s lore would suggest.

Little Details Suggest Susie Was Always Like This

The Legion in Dead by Daylight #1

What’s interesting regarding this turn of events is that Susie is never truly out-of-character throughout the first issue. She’s depicted throughout as a follower that tails behind her friend Julie. During a game of Truth or Dare in the woods, she tells the others that she’s afraid to die alone and doesn’t want to “see that no one really knew me.” These little details give fans something familiar regarding the fan-favorite character before making it clear that she isn’t simply an innocent pushed into following others – she’s a willing participant who saw an opportunity to be understood.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the rest of this telling of the Legion’s origin will play out given this new information. Susie’s role in the gang’s actions when they turn violent could be much bigger than fans believed. Dead by Daylight‘s first foray into comics has kicked off with a bang by redefining a fan-favorite character, and it’s done in such a subtle, natural way that it will undoubtedly make readers question what Susie will do next.
