Impossible Video Breaks Down Tom Cruise’s 12 Biggest Stunts & Shows What Was Real

Summary

  • Tom Cruise’s stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise have become iconic, with his most recent film pushing boundaries even further.
  • The video highlights some of Cruise’s biggest stunts, including an underwater sequence and a halo jump.
  • It would be difficult for Mission: Impossible to continue without Cruise, as finding a suitable replacement and replicating his stunt work would be challenging.

A new Mission: Impossible video breaks down Tom Cruise’s biggest stunts in the franchise. Playing Ethan Hunt for a couple of decades now, Cruise has done countless action scenes in the spy adventure film series. In its most recent installments, however, he and frequent collaborator, director Christopher McQuarrie have elevated the stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which Cruise performs himself.

Cruise’s biggest and most dangerous stunts in the franchise, including a few action set pieces from the critically-acclaimed Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, are broken down in a new Insider video. Watch it below:

Aside from his most recent outing as Ethan, the video also cites other iconic stunts from the franchise. That includes Cruise’s underwater stunt in Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation and halo jump in Mission: Impossible — Fallout.

Cruise’s Stunt Work Makes It Difficult To Continue Mission: Impossible Without Him

After Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise’s next big screen appearance as Ethan is already confirmed for next year. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two is set for a summer 2024 release date, effectively continuing its current narrative. There was an earlier assumption that the eighth film in the series could be the swan song to Cruise’s Hunt, but the actor recently floated the idea that he is interested in continuing beyond that with Mission: Impossible 9.

Unlike the Top Gun franchise, which was resurrected via Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, it will be difficult to do Mission: Impossible without Hunt. The 2022 blockbuster effectively set up Pete Mitchell’s successors with the introduction of Glen Powell’s Hangman and Miles Teller’s Rooster. Things are different with Mission: Impossible, however. Aside from the franchise not having a potential Ethan Hunt successor, it would also be difficult to replace Cruise, considering his penchant for doing dangerous stunts — something that has become synonymous with the franchise.

For what it’s worth, it doesn’t seem like Cruise has plans of slowing down any time soon. In fact, McQuarrie even teased that the actor’s underwater work in Rogue Nation will be topped in the next Mission: Impossible film. This highlights Cruise’s commitment to continuously push the boundaries when it comes to stunts in the Paramount franchise.
