The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Daredevil: Born Again gets criticized for snubbing the original Netflix series. Marvel’s Daredevil ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2015 to 2018. Matt Murdock actor Charlie Cox and Wilson Fisk star Vincent D’Onofrio have since returned to their roles in the MCU, with Disney+ working on a new series for the Marvel hero. Daredevil: Born Again will release in 2024. While the Marvel series gets ready to bring the character back to the small screen, a member of Marvel’s Daredevil speaks out on the MCU’s snub of the Netflix show.
Speaking on the Ikuzo Unscripted podcast (via The Direct), Cox’s stunt double on the Netflix Daredevil series, Chris Brewster, criticized Daredevil: Born Again for snubbing the original show. Brewster is against Marvel’s stance of not bringing back people who worked on the original series save for the returning cast members that have been announced for Daredevil: Born Again. According to the stunt double, “They [Marvel] really, truly don’t want it to be anything like the Marvel Netflix Daredevil.” Check out the full quote below:
“They really, truly don’t want it to be anything like the Marvel Netflix Daredevil. So, nobody that worked on the original series, other than the cast that they’re bringing back, is coming back. And I mean, there were just some truly, truly wonderful that worked on that show and I think they really added to the magic of that show. And I think Marvel’s making a big mistake, but what you gonna do?”
Why The MCU’s Daredevil Can’t Be Like Netflix’s Version
Daredevil: Born Again will be different from the Netflix series in a few ways. While the people working behind-the-scenes of the new series will not be the same that were part of Netflix’s Daredevil, including showrunners, stunt doubles, and more, the show will also be making big changes in front of the camera. Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page and Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson are not set to appear in the series, which will at least bring back Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.
Amid the behind-the-scenes changes happening due to the move from Netflix to Disney+ for the new Daredevil series, some key differences between the two series emerge. The MCU’s Daredevil simply cannot be exactly like the Netflix version of the character, as seen by Cox’s appearance as the hero in Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series. The show saw Cox’s Daredevil display acrobatic abilities that are in line with the character’s comic book exploits; however, they depart from the action in the Netflix series. That aspect partly explains why Brewster and other stunt doubles from the Netflix show were not brought back.
Another key change between the two series comes through their tones. Cox explained how the Netflix and Disney+ Daredevil shows will be different by saying that his instinct is that Daredevil: Born Again aims to broaden the “appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing” what worked in the original series. Cox maintains that Daredevil: Born Again should remain dark but won’t be as gory as the Netflix series, drawing a fine line between the two.
