Fans have noticed an odd similarity between the Napoleon poster and a fake movie starring Danny DeVito. The first trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming biopic on Napoleon Bonaparte has been released, alongside a poster teasing another awards-worthy performance from Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous historical figure. Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, and Ben Miles also star in Napoleon, with a screenplay written by David Scarpa.
With the release of the new poster, fans on Twitter realized that it looks exactly like the fake Napoleon movie that starred actor Martin Weir (DeVito) in 1995’s Get Shorty. Check out a few reactions on the matter below:
Twitter user Stephanie jokingly went so far as to claim Ridley’s Napoleon “STOLE” the same art style, having been struck by the similarity upon initially seeing the new poster.
Scott Hathaway quipped that it would’ve been nice to see the Get Shorty version of a Napoleon movie, though he does still have interest in seeing the upcoming film.
Each tweet highlights how Napoleon‘s teaser poster greatly mirrors the one from Get Shorty. Whether it was intentional or not, fans were quick to spot the similarities between both, which see Napoleon look directly at the person observing the poster.
This Isn’t The First Time Phoenix’s Napoleon Has Been Compared To DeVito
While comparisons to DeVito’s Martin Weir version of Napoleon in Get Shorty are funny, this isn’t the first time that Phoenix’s Napoleon has been compared to the fake movie. Some users were also making comments when the Napoleon trailer was first released. When set photos of Phoenix as the character surfaced while the movie was in production, there were jokes that people preferred the DeVito version, which does not exist other than the poster from Get Shorty.
In fact, nearly every notable Napoleon announcement has prompted jokes and comparisons to DeVito’s fictionalized take on the historical figure, such as claims that the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star should’ve played the part in Ridley’s film instead of Phoenix. These comments have been an ongoing joke among movie fans for some time. However, now that the Napoleon poster looks exactly like the one from Get Shorty, the initial jokes have now almost come true.
The similarities between the two Napoleon posters were likely unintentional. However, it’s fun to see fans actively spotting what could have inspired the teaser poster’s design, strange as it may be. Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Napoleon will be revealed later this year, and perhaps then the jokes will be laid to rest once and for all.
