Shazam Becomes Sin City’s Marv in Genius Mash-Up Fanart

Artist Dan Schkade brilliantly combines the worlds of Sin City and Shazam to hilarious effect in an awesome new piece of mash-up fanart.

It may not be the first mash-up that fans would think of, but a recent piece of fanart combines Shazam with Sin City’s Marv in what turns out to be an inventive combination of the two very different heroes.

Artist Dan Schkade shared his Sin City/Shazam mash-up via Twitter. The art features a hilarious take on the famous scene from the first Sin City storyline The Hard Goodbye in which main character Marv is arming up with various tools and weapons. Schkade has replaced Marv with Shazam in his spoof piece, with the hero listing off the mythic deities and heroes from whom he draws his name: the Wisdom of Solomon, the Strength of Hercules, the Stamina of Atlas, the Power of Zeus, the Courage of Achilles…“and my Mitts,” Schkade portrays Shazam completing the letters that spell his name. It’s hard to imagine an innocent, child-like character such as Billy Batson existing in the bleak, hyper-violent world of Sin City, which is part of what makes Schkade’s mash-up so humorous. Perhaps most impressive of all is Schkade’s perfect recreation of Frank Miller’s distinctive chiaroscuro style. It was on Sin City where Miller simplified his style into heavy shadows and expressionistic lighting, with the occasional splash of color for dramatic impact. Schkade captures all of Miller’s artistic flourishes in his piece, even adding in a splash of red for Billy Batson’s costume when Shazam says finally says his one magic word and takes flight.

Interestingly, Frank Miller has actually drawn Shazam before. An aged version of the hero appeared in Miller’s 2001 sequel to The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again. That storyline sees Shazam forced to work for Lex Luthor after the villains kidnaps ally Mary Marvel and forces the hero to do his bidding. Shazam ultimately winds up sacrificing himself while fighting off an alien invasion from Brainiac in Metropolis, spouting his iconic magic word one last time in appropriately-overblown Frank Miller fashion.

It seems unlikely that the worlds of Sin City and Shazam will ever officially cross over any time soon, but Dan Schkade deserves massive props for his creative and hilarious fanart of the two.
