This Article Contains Quotes From An Interview Conducted Before The SAG-AFTRA StrikeStar Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ Jess Bush teases working with Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Jack Quaid in season 2’s highly anticipated crossover episode. Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff (as well as Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan), the crossover titled “Those Old Scientists” brings Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome’s animated Ensigns, Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner, into live-action when they come aboard Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) USS Enterprise. No doubt, some time travel shenanigans will be employed to bring the 24th-century Lower Deckers into the 23rd-century.
In an interview with TrekMovie conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Jess Bush was asked if her character, Nurse Christine Chapel, got screen time with Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ guest stars in the Strange New Worlds crossover. Read Jess’ reply and quote below:
Yeah, a little. That was so fun. That’s so fun. I didn’t actually get to go work directly with Tawny in particular, but I worked with Jack. And just having them both in the table read before the episode was such a joy because the tone of Lower Decks is so different. It’s so much faster and funnier having their energy injected into the cast was so cool. It was a real blast.
What To Expect From Star Trek: Lower Decks & Strange New Worlds Crossover Episode
Director Jonathan Frakes describes the Strange New Worlds crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks as a “flat-out comedy,” and trailers for SNW season 2 have already shown that Boimler and Mariner meet Captain Pike, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong). Jess Bush confirms that Nurse Chapel has scenes with Jack Quaid’s Boimler to look forward to, and it’s already fun to speculate what their interactions could entail. It also sounds like the Lower Deckers possibly divide and conquer the Enterprise for sure-to-be memorable moments with different crew members.
Star Trek on Paramount+ will have a Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 22, and the lucky fans in attendance will get to screen the Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover episode. This is fitting since the crossover was officially announced at last year’s Comic-Con when Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome crashed Strange New Worlds‘ Hall H panel. Star Trek history will be made when Lower Decks meets Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and it’s great to know Nurse Chapel sharing the screen with Ensign Boimler will be part of the festivities.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams Thursday on Paramount+.
