Why the Marvel Cinematic Universe got rid of Ms. Marvel’s mask for The Marvels can be explained by one simple story reason. Iman Vellani debuted as Kamala Khan in the MCU not long ago, leading her own Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel, in 2022. The show saw the character go on a path of self-discovery, which took her from an Avengers and Captain Marvel super fan to a superhero herself. By the end of the series, Kamala Khan fully became Ms. Marvel, donning a comic book-accurate costume that looked like it was pulled straight from the page to the screen.
Following her MCU debut, Ms. Marvel is set to join Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in The Marvels. Ms. Marvel‘s post-credits scene teased the team-up movie, with Carol Danvers switching places mysteriously with Kamala, appearing in the young hero’s bedroom. Kamala will have a brand-new costume in The Marvels, which brings a design that differs from the comic book-accurate suit she wore in the Ms. Marvel finale. With the costume change, gone is Ms. Marvel’s mask, but there might be a simple reason behind its absence from The Marvels.
Ms. Marvel Doesn’t Need To Protect Her Identity In The Marvels
Ms. Marvel’s costume not having a mask can be simply explained by the setting of The Marvels. As has been revealed by footage from the movie, The Marvels will be an even bigger cosmic adventure than Captain Marvel was, with the majority of the plot taking place in space. Kamala only recently became a superhero, so while protecting her identity on Earth makes sense, her first outer-world adventure does not require her to wear a mask.
Kamala will be alongside Carol and Monica in space, with the duo, and Nick Fury, as revealed by The Marvels‘ trailer, likely being the only humans she will interact with during her cosmic adventure. Being in space, the rest of the characters Ms. Marvel encounters won’t carry any danger to her family, meaning she does not have to keep her identity a secret to keep them safe. No one will know who Kamala Khan is, so there is no problem with her not having a mask, which Marvel might have done to put her in a similar situation to Carol and Monica, who also won’t have masks in the film.
Will Ms. Marvel Go Back To Wearing A Mask After The Marvels?
Ms. Marvel wearing a mask after The Marvels is a strong possibility, albeit not set in stone. Ms. Marvel is known for wearing a mask in the comics to protect her identity. However, the MCU is not exactly known for having heroes care for their secret identities. The most popular cases of such concern come from Spider-Man and Daredevil, two street-level heroes.
While Ms. Marvel was originally a street-level hero, the cosmic nature of her powers, as well as her adventure with Carol and Monica in The Marvels, might see her leave the need for a secret identity behind. Still, given her young age and desire to keep her family safe, it is more likely than not that Ms. Marvel will go back to her mask after The Marvels.
