NYers are right to be furious about their sacrifices to accommodate migrants

Mayor Eric Adams’ prediction that the migrant crisis is coming “to a neighborhood near you” is proving painfully true — and residents are beyond furious.

They have every right to be.

The city placed at least 60 migrant men in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park Recreation Center on Saturday and another 55 at McCarren Park’s Play Center, crowding out other users.

On Monday, officials confirmed plans for a migrant shelter for 2,000 men on Randall’s Island’s children’s soccer fields, with construction to begin immediately.

There’s even been talk of using parts of Central Park in Manhattan, the city’s crown jewel, for migrants.

Sure, New Yorkers are compassionate, but there’s a limit — especially when the blows to the quality of life are so major and come with little notice (and no end in sight).

It’s a system totally out of control, the likes of which New York (and the nation) have never seen before.

No wonder residents are steamed.

Over the weekend, hundreds near the Sunset Park facility (many of them immigrants themselves) took to the streets in protest.

Many signed a petition they plan to send to Adams and other city officials.

“People are really upset,” one local railed. Everyone in the community uses the facility, and “now you take away all the benefit to us and give it to them. What the hell?!”

Those who cherish parkland at Randall’s Island were equally livid, telling The Post that plans to convert space there for migrants destroys decades of efforts to ensure young people have sufficient sports fields to play on, helping keep them from more anti-social activities.

“Surely a less precious space can be found, rather than alienating parkland, perhaps by using private rather than public space,” Randall’s Island Park Alliance co-Chairs Jonathan May and Nancy Neff wrote to Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi.

Meanwhile, Hizzoner is desperately scraping for space that simply doesn’t exist.

Yet President Joe Biden — whose open-door policies led to the city and nationwide crisis — won’t even give Adams (a fellow Democrat) the time of day.

And progressives who live in Fantasyland (The New York Times’ Mara Gay springs to mind) think Adams — i.e., New Yorkers — aren’t sacrificing enough to accommodate the thousands of migrants who’ve popped up without warning. Or planning.

As we’ve noted, she slams the mayor for forgetting the city’s history of immigrant waves, failing to give newcomers more than basic services and looking to halt the never-ending flow that’s overwhelmed the city’s capacity to absorb them.

The truth? Legal immigrants were never treated as well as the illegal ones are treated today.

They arrived with a solid, orderly system in place and with places to go so they wouldn’t need major sacrifices to be made by the public.

Biden has ignored federal rules and trashed the system unlike any president before.

That comes with a serious price.

New Yorkers — and Americans around the nation — are now paying it.
