Summary
- Suits’ popularity on Netflix could lead to a prequel spinoff, potentially exploring young Robert Zane’s story.
- Writers and actors in Hollywood being on strike in 2023 makes it impossible to order a prequel, but talks could begin once the strikes end.
- A prequel series about Robert Zane would work well, as it wouldn’t require the original cast to return and could explore new territories in the Suits universe.
Suits is gaining numerous new fans following its arrival on Netflix’s streaming library, meaning that the possibility of one or multiple spinoffs of the beloved USA Network series is greater than ever, even four years after its finale. The first eight seasons (the ninth season is exclusive to Peacock’s streaming catalog) were added to Netflix in June 2023, and a couple of months later, the show is still topping the streaming charts. For one reason or another, Suits is dominating the game, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, meaning that its resurgence could lead to a previously discarded prequel.
Suits aired from June 2011 to September 2019 on the USA Network, where it experienced evident success, given that the network ordered nine seasons of the series. It starred Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter, Patrick J. Adams as Mike Ross, Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt, Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen, Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson, and Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane. Although Markle was a series regular and her character was a fan favorite, Suits creator Aaron Korsh was interested in developing a prequel revolving around a different Zane.
Suits’ Streaming Success Means A Prequel Can Finally Happen
The majority of Hollywood is on strike during the summer of 2023, meaning that getting a Suits prequel spinoff ordered is nearly impossible. But once the writers and actors strikes come to an end, talks surrounding a continuation of the popular legal drama television series are bound to begin, and Aaron Korsh is more than ready to return to the world of Suits. According to TV Fanatic, the creator addressed questions surrounding a possible reboot or continuation of the USA Network series on Twitter. He said:
“Let me say right off that there is no [Suits] reboot or anything in the works. Strike would have to end, some network or streamer would have to reach out, and then we would have to collectively want to. Which is no small thing … I had an idea for a [Suits] spinoff that was a prequel exploring young Robert Zane, fresh out of law school in the early ’90s. The network wasn’t interested at the time. I would still do that.”
Suits creator would be open to exploring the idea of a Robert Zane prequel series, a television show he had previously pitched to the network. Unfortunately, the executives turned him down, but given Suits‘ newfound popularity in 2023, anything is possible. Perhaps a Robert Zane prequel will be ordered to series (whenever the strikes end and it’s possible to make television shows again).
Why A Young Zane Suits Prequel Could Actually Work
Rumors and speculation about a Suits reboot have grown following the show’s addition to Netflix. But it’s likely impossible to get the entire gang back together to produce a tenth season. In particular, Meghan Markle would probably decline an invitation back, and it wouldn’t feel right if Rachel wasn’t involved, especially given her ties to Mike, Harvey, and Donna. However, a prequel series about Rachel’s father, Robert Zane, would work on many levels. For starters, the original cast members wouldn’t have to return. Plus, every Suits character got a perfect sendoff during the season 9 finale, so it would make more sense to go back in time and explore other unchartered territories.
