Senegal Sall’s backs Prime Minister Ba for 2024 presidential elections

Senegal President Macky Sall on Saturday designated Prime Minister Amadou Ba as the ruling party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, presidential and governmental sources said.

Issued on:

Sall, who took power in 2012 and was re-elected in 2019, announced in July after months of political uncertainty that he would not seek a third term to sidestep potential constitutional issues.

His party gave him the option of choosing his preferred successor.

A presidential spokesman confirmed Sall was putting forward 62-year-old Ba, head of government since September 2022.

Ba had been seen as a favourite among a field of around a dozen potential candidates from the Sall camp.

The Benno Bokk Yakaar governmental coalition published pictures of Ba on social media as its candidate, presenting him as “a coherent choice for a first round victory.”

His designation followed a televised meeting of coalition leaders with Sall at the presidential palace.
