The comedy filled with mystery and murder, Only Murders in the Building, has been renewed for a new season. The announcement came the same day that the finale aired, giving fans worldwide ease and excitement at the same time: the funniest podcasters on the small screen will come back to solve another murder. The Emmy award-winning show doesn’t have a date to return, but it will likely happen in 2025.
Only Murders in the Building twists the classic genre, whodunit, and intrigues the audience just as much as it makes them laugh. While the cases get more complex and involve multiple clues every season, the main reason why it thrives is its unforgettable characters. The cast receives new actors every season, some of whom are extremely critically acclaimed. Here are ten characters we would like to see returning to the podcast and the Arconia in the next season of Only Murders in the Building.
10 Uma
Uma, played by Jackie Hoffman, has been a staple Arconia resident since season one. In the latest season, her relationship with Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell) was deepened a little, and her grief of losing her best friend was shown. She is not known for being the most patient or understanding person. Nevertheless, Uma is a great character that may not be fundamental for the plot, but she deepens the world the characters live in — and has some of the snarkiest comebacks.
9 Joy
Joy is played by Andrea Martin. Joy and Charles’ (Steve Martin) relationship ended badly in Season 3; she called off their engagement when Charles said he didn’t mean to propose to her. She apparently is, by the season finale, already in a new relationship. If she returns in the new season, and Charles could try to amend things. Joy is a person who is filled with happiness, and Charles realizes he wants to be with her. Is he too late? Joy will have to come back to get that answer.
8 Theo
Theo, played by James Caverly, is closest to Mabel (Selena Gomez) of the lead trio, and he even lets her stay in his apartment while she figures out her living situation. He is not only a great friend but also a valuable source when it comes to helping solve clues and murders. He is an interesting character who should get more screen time. As his relationship with Mabel evolves, he becomes even more involved with their podcast and helps them solve the next murder.
7 Cinda
Cinda Canning, played by Tina Fey, was a big part of season one, a smaller one but still important in Season 2, and she only appeared once in Season 3. With her ruthless ambition to have the best crime podcast, she was funny and an incentive for the lead trio and kept them on their toes. Cinda had a complete makeover, so it would be interesting to see where her she is now and how she interacts with her podcast rivals.
6 Jerry
Jerry, played by Peter Bartlett, is a new character from Season 3. He is a theater director who ends up secretly living in the theater. Jerry and Oliver (Martin Short) met years ago, and their every interaction is hilarious. With the musical continuing in production, it would be fun to see how his living situation changes, if at all. Also, with his newfound success, Oliver could help Jerry out career-wise. Bartlett did an amazing job at making a character with very few scenes memorable and funny.
5 Detective Williams
Detective Williams, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, has been a constant guest since Season 1, appearing in a few episodes every season. She is a great character who has chemistry with the leads. Detective Williams gets a bit tired of the amateur podcasters, and her reactions couldn’t be funnier. It would be nice to see more of her in the next season, as in the last one, she appeared more in the final episodes.
4 Howard
Howard, played by Michael Cyril Creighton, was, at first, just a funny neighbor at the Arconia. However, his character grew a lot, and he was more of a participant in the lead story as the show progressed. He is hilarious and loves the theater as no other. He should have a chance to shine on the stage and on the new season of the series. Howard also helped solve the final clue of the murder, gluing shredded pieces of paper together, which he almost went blind doing. He really wanted to be a part of the podcast, and he would be a great guest to have.
3 Lucy
Lucy, is played by Zoe Colletti, and was a part of the previous seasons of the show, but not the latest one. Lucy’s relationship with Charles was endearing to see. She brings a fresher set of eyes to the case and the clues, as well as being incredibly important to her former stepdad. Lucy is funny and sometimes brings a faster pace to their conversations. She also is a younger link with whom Mabel can connect with. With Charles being a target on the next case they investigate, Lucy would raise the stakes by being there.
2 Jan
Jan, played by Amy Ryan, was Charles’ first girlfriend on the show, who turned out to be the murderer in Season 1. She is currently in a relationship with Sazz (Jane Lynch), Charles’ stunt woman, and is locked in prison. Jan was a hilarious character that has the possibility of coming back to the main cast this next season, given what happened in the Season 3finale. As the characters and audience spent a lot of time with her in Season 1, it would be interesting to see how the character could develop and how she interacts with others.
1 Loretta
How much Meryl Streep hypnotizes everyone once she steps on screen is an easy statement to make. Her character in Only Murders in the Building, Loretta was a highlight this season, and she still has a lot of room to develop. Loretta is funny, flawed, and an incredible addition to the show. Will she get the break as an actress she so desperately hoped for her entire life? Only a new season will tell. This, combined with her romantic relationship with Oliver, she could come back for more, and fans should dearly hope so.
