British Airways has just launched a promotion, through which Executive Club members can earn double Avios on paid flights this fall and into early 2024.Â
While the airline has offered this promotion in the past, it’s the first time it’s being launched since British Airways shifted to a revenue-based earning model, and it has the potential to be lucrative.
British Airways Launches Double Avios Promotion
British Airways has just launched a promotion for Executive Club members, who can earn double Avios on paid flights this fall and winter.
Importantly, you must register first for the offer, as any flights booked prior to registration aren’t eligible for double Avios. If you’re based in the UK, you can register on the UK landing page, and if you’re based in the US, you can register on the US landing page.Â
It appears that accounts based in Canada may also register for the promotion on either landing page.
Once you’ve registered, you have until November 21, 2023, to book flights with British Airways. You’ll then earn double Avios on up to 10 flights, which must be completed by January 14, 2024.
You must attach your British Airways Executive Club account number at the time of booking to be eligible for double Avios.
Flights that are eligible for double Avios include all flights operated by British Airways, as well as flights between Europe and North America with American Airlines, Iberia, and Finnair, as long as they’re marketed by British Airways.
As per the promotion’s terms and conditions, each flight segment on a booking counts towards the 10 flights.Â
Therefore, a direct flight from London to New York would count as one flight, a round-trip from London to New York and back would count as two flights, and a multi-segment trip from Edinburgh–London–New York and back would count as four flights.
As a reminder, British Airways recently shifted to a revenue-based earning model, and the standard amount of Avios you earn depends on your status level and how much you spend on base fare, carrier-imposed surcharges, and extras such as seat selection, baggage, or upgrades, outlined as follows:
- Blue members earn 6 Avios per £1 spent
- Bronze members earn 7 Avios per £1 spent
- Silver members earn 8 Avios per £1 spent
- Gold and above members earn 9 Avios per £1 spent
With this promotion, those numbers are doubled, and you’ll earn the following number of Avios on eligible charges, depending on your status tier:
- Blue members earn 12 Avios per £1 spent
- Bronze members earn 14 Avios per £1 spent
- Silver members earn 16 Avios per £1 spent
- Gold and above members earn 18 Avios per £1 spent
For tickets purchased in currencies other than British pounds, the total eligible spend is converted into pounds, and you’re awarded Avios based on that amount.
If you book a British Airways Holiday Package, which includes flights and a hotel and/or a car rental, you’ll earn double Avios on the flight segments, as well as 2 Avios per £1 spent on the other parts of the package.
Earn 12–18 Avios per £1 SpentÂ
If you have any potential flights to book during the promotion’s eligibility period, it’s certainly worthwhile to register for the promotion, since the return you’ll get is quite good.
We value Avios at 1.5 cents per Avios (USD) / 2 cents per Avios (CAD), which is equivalent to around 1.2 pence per Avios.Â
Using this metric, we’d place the following values on the Avios earned per £1 spent on eligible charges through the current promotion:
- Blue members earn 12 Avios per £1 spent, which we’d value at 14.4 pence, 30 cents (USD), or 24 cents (CAD)
- Bronze members earn 14 Avios per £1 spent, which we’d value at 16.8 pence, 21 cents (USD), or 28 cents (CAD)
- Silver members earn 16 Avios per £1 spent, which we’d value at 19.2 pence, 24 cents (USD), or 32 cents (CAD)
- Gold and above members earn 18 Avios per £1 spent, which we’d value at 21.6 pence, 27 cents (USD), or 36 cents (CAD)
Even as a Blue member, you stand to get a solid return in Avios with the double Avios promotion for flights this fall and into early 2024.
For example, let’s take a round-trip flight from Toronto to London in economy for December 2023.
The total amount of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges in this example amounts to $1,051 (CAD), which is roughly equivalent to £628.
With this promotion, you’d earn the following number of Avios, depending on your status tier:
- Blue members would earn 7,536 Avios
- Bronze members would earn 8,792 Avios
- Silver members would earn 10,048 Avios
- Gold and above members would earn 11,304 Avios
To put that into perspective, 7,500 Avios is enough for a one-way off-peak flight in economy between 651 and 1,151 miles, such as between London and Rome.
Furthermore, 10,000 Avios is enough for a one-way off-peak flight in economy between 1,152 and 2,000 miles, such as between London and Istanbul.
You’ll also earn extra points for the amount charged to a credit card. If you were to charge that same flight to the RBC® British Airways Visa Infinite†, you’d earn an extra 2 Avios per dollar spent (CAD), which in the above example amounts to 2,710 Avios.
While it’s not worth going out of your way to book flights simply to earn Avios, if you were going to fly with British Airways over the next few months anyway, you’ll at least get a solid return in the form of Avios by registering for the promotion and then booking your flights.
Conclusion
British Airways has just launched its latest double Avios promotion, through which you’ll earn double Avios on paid flights this fall and into early 2024. You must register for the promotion before you book flights to be eligible for double Avios, so be sure to head to the UK landing page or the US landing page first, depending on which continent you’re based in.
Once you’ve registered, you can earn 12–18 Avios per £1 spent, which can be a very lucrative return on spending.Â
Keep in mind that you have until November 21, 2023, to register and book, and then until January 14, 2024 to complete eligible travels.
