Dreamy and ‘affordable’ Greek island is a top destination for British expats | Travel News | Travel

As prices rise in the UK, many Britons are thinking of moving abroad. But where are Europe’s best destinations for British expats?

While Spain is usually the first choice for retired Britons, there is a huge range of sunny options across Europe.

Christopher Nye, chief editor at Your Overseas Home, said: “Europe offers a wealth of enticing regions for property buyers.

“From our data, it seems that the general trend for property buyers in 2023 continues to be prioritising coastal regions and those that are renowned for their cultural significance and natural beauty.”

According to the team’s research, one of the best destinations for British expats is a dreamy Greek island.

Christopher said: “Crete, the largest Greek island, continues to be an enticing destination for both individuals and families seeking a new place to call home.

“Boasting a strong expat community in areas like Chania and Heraklion, as well as an affordable cost of living, the island’s cultural heritage is evident in its traditional villages, unique customs and delicious cuisine.”

Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and the island’s history can be traced back to the 7th millennium BC. The island’s air is thought to have healing powers.

Crete features heavily in Greek mythology and was the birthplace of Zeus and the home of the fearsome Minotaur.

The eastern side of the island is known for rugged beaches while Crete’s western side is busier with coastal villages.

Christopher said: “Buyers in Crete can choose from traditional homes, modern apartments and luxurious villas, with prices usually based on specific location and proximity to the coast.”
