Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s next film, is already projected to be a new masterpiece in the director’s career. In fact, its current Rotten Tomatoes score surpasses all but one of his films from this century, and is his joint highest-rated movie since Goodfellas.
Based on David Grann’s nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the story is set in Oklahoma in the 1920s, when a series of suspicious deaths plague the Osage community. What appears to be a disturbing list of isolated cases gradually reveals itself as a terrible conspiracy to seize the money of the Osage people, which they have obtained after discovering pre-oil deposits on their lands.
Killers of the Flower Moon reunites the director with the two actors who have marked his career, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, accompanied by a great cast that includes Scott Shepherd, Pat Healy, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbott Jr., Gary Basaraba, Brendan Fraser, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.
After its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and just a few days before its release in theaters, critics are already calling the film one of the best in Scorsese’s filmography, and its score on Rotten Tomatoes is a reflection of this. At the time of writing this article, Killers of the Flower Moon has an approval rate of 95%, surpassing all the filmmaker’s films within this century, except for The Irishman, which has the same score.
Also based on a book, I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, The Irishman follows the life of Frank Sheeran, a World War II veteran and hired killer who recounts his most important experiences, including the case of Jimmy Hoffa, one of the greatest mysteries of American criminal history. The film also has DeNiro as the main star, joined by two other major Hollywood legends: Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
