The final scene filmed by the late, great Ray Liotta has been praised by Dangerous Waters director John Barr, who describes the Goodfellas star as “unafraid” and “super impressive to watch.” Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Barrr could not heap enough praise on Liotta and his talent as an actor, with Dangerous Waters marking one of the actor’s final movie roles.
“What he achieves in a six or seven minutes span is just art. The arc that he goes through, from innocent to terrifying, it’s so powerful and it’s a testament to how incredible he was as an actor. The way that we played that scene was really interesting, because we talked about it a lot, and we basically played the scene in those various tones multiple times, like innocent throughout the whole take, and then just slowly, gradually got darker and darker to where it where it ended up. So we could kind of choose when we were editing where we wanted the turn to start to happen. I think he just was unafraid. He would just go darker and darker. It was super impressive to watch.”

Dangerous Waters Star Odeya Rush Talks Starring Alongside Ray Liotta
The praise for the great talent that was Ray Liotta continues courtesy of his co-stars Odeya Rush and Eric Dane. Rush, who appears in the final scene alongside Liotta, describes what it was like continuing the project following his death in May 2022.
“Yeah, I think Ray’s approach to filmmaking came from so much passion and respect, so when we had to continue, that’s just something that was always on the front of our minds for everyone, just to honor him and remember him. For me, he’s just remembered as someone that would care so much and cared so deeply, and was such a pleasure to work with. So it was about continuing that as well.”
Liotta’s final scene in Dangerous Waters promises to be something truly special, as Odeya Rush’s Rose and Liotta’s The Captain take on the roles of predator and prey, with Rush holding her own against the powerhouse that was Ray Liotta.
Rush continued, saying:
“So what’s interesting is, I felt like on my coverage, what Ray was doing was giving me even more of that. And he was just we did that scene. We took an entire day to do that scene. And I think the scene just got better and better as it went on. And I feel like everything he brought, I was just absorbing that and reacting to that. So yeah, that was a really special day, and I felt like I was there to react is incredible work that he had done. It felt very real.”
Eric Dane meanwhile describes Liotta as “a force on screen” and knows that the entire filmmaking community will miss him.
“I think obviously the acting community will miss him. But I also think that the writing and directing communities will miss him as well. I think he was somebody that people enjoyed working with. He was a dynamic actor and a force on screen.”
Dangerous Waters was released in theaters and video on demand on October 13, 2023.
