5 Us (2019)

Us follows the Wilson family on their beach holiday but their peaceful getaway turns into a nightmare when their quiet underground is invaded by a cover of eerie doppelgängers known as the Tethered. Apparently, these are people that look exactly like the Wilson family but they cause harm to their counterparts to blame them for their own unfair lives.

As a metaphor for class war and the duality of human nature, Peele crafts a new yet familiar family that is both an ultimate enemy and a reflection of our own societal inequalities. The movie was released back in 2019 and it stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss as the main characters, who each give hauntingly beautiful performances.

But soon, their true selves are exposed and we realize that they’re not what their social media selves claim they are.

With one dead body on the ground and several accusations flying around in a candle lit house, Bodies Bodies Bodies becomes a satire of performative wokeness and cancel culture. Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Sennott, Pete Davidson, and Chase Sui Wonders shine as the leads bringing their razor-sharp wit to the story.

While Rose’s parents welcome him with warmth in the first few minutes, Chris senses the disquiet in their behavior and discovers that there’s more to this house than what meets the eye.

Apparently, the Armitage clan plans to sell the bodies of Black people as vessels. The movie makes subtle comments on white liberalism, appropriation, and racism with the help of its gripping story. Daniel Kaluuya is truly incredible as an outsider just realizing how brutal the world outside of his community is. On several occasions, Peele has tried to prove that humans are the scariest monsters. But it is with Get Out that he really hits the mark.

Even though the plot of the movie isn’t unique or original, the fact that the movie tries to dissect every pre-existing trope of the slasher genre with the help of characters who know they’re in a movie and that they fall under a cliché is something else. Besides Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox give memorable performances as teens trying to fight off a maniac. Scream is probably the only self-aware horror film out there, and that’s why it still marches on as a scary but smart franchise.
