At its inception, the cast of Vanderpump Rules was stacked with bartenders and servers. Drinks were always at the ready, and good gracious, did these young personalities partake. At times, these cast members partied way too hard. The resulting storylines included lost memories, copious cheating, and divisions within this messy, long-standing group of friends.
Luckily, the cast has grown up a lot since their first season on-air, which was all the way back in 2013. Home purchases, children, marriages, divorces, and new business are the current trends these days over on VPR. Shockingly, a few have even given up drinking. Whether temporarily or for good, these are the cast members who have gone sober.
Lala Kent
Lala Kent just celebrated five years of sobriety. Choosing Chili’s for her sobriety “birthday,” which she celebrates each year that she’s liquor free, Lala was flanked by her past and present co-stars. In attendance, we either spotted, or, checked out their socials and saw that they were present, Stassi Schroeder, Katie Maloney, Ariana Madix, Jax Taylor, Brittany Cartwright, and Scheana Shay. As for Chili’s, their Molten Chocolate Cake and table chips with ranch can get it, so we are supportive.
In another post, the sober Vanderpump Rules star lent her support to those on this same path. “I will continue to work hard for my sobriety, & take a moment of silence for the alcoholic who still suffers. I see you- I love you. Thank you, God. Happy birthday to me!,” Lala penned.
Lala’s life has had its fair showing of ups and downs. In April 2019, Lala’s dad passed away. In a misguided effort to get through her grief, LaLa told E! News that she began drinking non-stop, literally, from morning until night. “It was how I was coping,” the Bravo star explained.
“When I went on the full on binge drinking for, I believe it was three or four days straight, I just woke up with that feeling of being out of control, not knowing what I did, just the guilt and the shame and that was the moment I said I’m taking my life back. I’m not living one more day this way,” Lala decided.
After welcoming her daughter Ocean in 2021 with her then-fiancé, Randall Emmett, the pair parted ways. Currently, the legal system and Randall are giving her hell, but for her own sanity, Lala has remained sober, for both her daughter and for herself.
Jax Taylor
Jax is posting more protein shakes than booze these days. In fact, Jax even went sober for a bit, though where he currently stands with the bottle is unknown. Appearing on the Daddy Issues podcast back in 2021, Jax announced, “I don’t drink alcohol anymore.” That said, Jax is what others would consider to be “California sober,” as he still partakes in weed.
A few days prior to his wife Brittany giving birth to their son, Jax started smoking. On the podcast, he explained that he went this route to best help him cope with the death of his father. To date, Jax still starts his day off with this substance. “The coffee and the weed, they kind of level me out,” he explained before stressing again that he no longer drinks liquor.
Tom Sandoval
Tom Sandoval had a rough go on Vanderpump Rules Season 10. After being with Ariana for years, his affair with Rachel Leviss was unearthed. This caused Ariana to bolt. From their relationship, that is, not their house, as the pair are still cohabiting together in their Valley Village home, awaiting its future sale.
Needless to say, Tom faced a lot of heated responses over his actions, from his castmates to the viewers alike. Wildly, people took their anger out on his bar, Schwartz and Sandy’s, leaving negative reviews that affected the innocent employees within. Likewise, others showed up to his shows, heckling the lead singer of Tom Sandoval and The Most Extras for his duplicitous role played.
On stage at one such showing, Tom revealed that he was now sober. “Y’all know it’s been one month since I had my last drink of alcohol. I’m just taking a little break for a second,” he shared. In more recent news, Tom took to his new podcast, Everybody Loves Tom, to share that his sobriety journey saved his life, and that it is still intact, making him seven months sober to date.
“I haven’t drank since, I believe it was April 4th or 5th. I didn’t really tell a lot of people during the process…I think that kind of helps. I also quit smoking cigarettes. I was kind of at the point where I was just chain-smoking cigarettes all day, every day,” he shared
Following the Scandoval backlash, Tom stated if he “wasn’t working out,” he was “drinking.” This sounds excessive, so we are thankful that Tom has made changes, giving sobriety a go. Let’s face it, Tom needs all the help that he can get going into Season 11.
James Kennedy
In the early days of VPR, James Kennedy was a constant drunken mess. His wit became less funny, moving towards deeper, more damaging remarks. He also lost multiple DJ gigs within Lisa Vanderpump‘s various establishments. Following Season 7, James realized that he had a problem, so he began a sober living lifestyle.
The next few seasons saw James repairing damaged friendships, finding further success as a DJ, buying a home, and starting a new relationship with Ally Lewber. That said, Vanderpump Rules Season 10 just showed James ending his alcohol-free run, though to be fair, his behaviors remained (mostly) checked. As for where James goes from here, only time will tell.
