The last few years have seen a number of big legacy sequels hitting cinemas and streaming platforms, with varying degrees of success. While fans of a certain age are looking forward to another Ghostbusters movie and Beetlejuice 2, another classic movie rumored to be getting a sequel is the 2000 version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. However, it seems that those hoping to see the comedy icon getting his green on again are going to be sorely disappointed after a new update on the matter.
The status of Carrey’s career has been debated a lot recently, with the star having openly discussed the possibility that he could be about to retire. While this has cast doubt on his possible return to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise for a third time out as Dr. Eggman/Robotnik, it also brought into question those whispers of another Grinch outing being on the cards. Now in a statement to People, Carrey’s rep has seemingly shut down the rumors for good. They said:
“There is no truth to Jim reprising his role as the Grinch in a sequel to The Grinch.”
Although this will be disappointing news for fans hoping that the many online rumors were true, it is probably not the most surprising end to the conversation, given Carrey’s recent retirement comments, and his general dislike of sequels. Back in 2017, in an interview with CinemaBlend, Carrey expressed a general disinterest in making sequels, calling them “largely commercial ventures.” In his career, the actor has only appeared in three sequels to his movies; Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Dumb and Dumber To, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While the Sega sequel was a huge hit, the other movies failed to quite capture the same magic as their predecessors.

Is Jim Carrey Retiring?
There are many actors who decide to take a break from Hollywood, whether it is a short-term measure or a longer plan. Jim Carrey announced his desire to retire from the industry back in April 2023 soon after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. At the time, Carrey told Access Hollywood that he could be back if the right script came up, but he was really enjoying a quieter life. He said:
“If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break. I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
So far, the status of his character in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has not been revealed, despite filming already being underway on the threequel. However, it seems that when it comes to his possible return in a sequel to The Grinch, that is just one Christmas wish that fans are not going to see come true.
