Following Jeremy Renner‘s incredible recovery from a serious New Year’s Day accident, Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown is ramping up to begin filming its third season. According to Deadline, the crime thriller created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon will start production in early 2024. After filming for the show’s second season wrapped, and before that season aired, Renner was accidentally run over by his seven-ton snow plow and seriously injured. He suffered more than 30 broken bones, blunt chest trauma, and orthopedic injuries and required multiple surgeries. Due to the severity of Renner’s accident, it was questionable whether The Avengers star would ever return to acting, but his miraculous recovery will see him back on screen sooner rather than later.

On his path to recovery, Renner has undergone several types of therapy, including physical therapy, cold plunges, exosomes, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, infrared therapy, IV drips, peptide injections, and stem cell therapy. Just days ago, the actor commemorated ten months of recovery with a video posted on social media, captioned:
“Today marks the day on 10 months of recovery …. First attempt at any of this activity (especially at steep grade) and was brought to tears of joy, hopefulness, and gratitude for all your support along with my family and friends…. I keep pushing for many reasons, but you are my fuel.”
Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over and Renner is faring much better, Mayor of Kingstown can move forward. It can do so reasonably quickly, as half of the third season’s scripts were written before the writer’s strike commenced in May; the remaining episodes were penned following the strike’s conclusion on September 27. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Mayor of Kingstown was renewed for a third season months ago, but the streamer waited for Renner’s recovery to announce the renewal publicly.
Jeremy Renner’s Upcoming Projects: From Mayor of Kingstown to Music
Mayor of Kingstown stars Renner as Mike McLusky, the unofficial mayor of a crime-filled town. Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest also starred in the show’s first two seasons, along with series co-creator Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Derek Webster and Hamish Allan-Headley. The series is part of Yellowstone co-creator Sheridan’s impressive Paramount+ catalog, which includes the Yellowstone spinoffs 1883 and 1923, and Tulsa King and Special Ops: Lioness (Sheridan also serves as an executive producer for the streamer’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves). According to Paramount+, Mayor of Kingstown is the third-best-performing original drama on the platform, with Sheridan’s 1923 and Tulsa King claiming the top spots.
Along with returning for the anticipated third season of Mayor of Kingstown, Renner hopes to release music he composed during his recovery. Through a social media post, Renner shared:
“A collection of music we wrote about different milestones in my journey of recovery since Jan 1st this year. ‘Love and Titanium’ has been painful, deeply healing, and ultimately cathartic for me to create. I hope I get the courage to share with you all.
The first two seasons of Mayor of Kingstown are streaming on Paramount+ — no news yet on a premiere date for season three.
