World’s Finest: Teen Titans #5 by Mark Waid, Emanuela Lupacchino, Jordie Bellaire, and Steve Wands sees the Teen Titans at their lowest point in the series after their former mentee Haywire assembles his own “Terror Titans” to take the team down. The interpersonal conflicts throughout the series finally take their toll on the Titans, leaving the team distracted and unable to focus on the fight at hand and leading to their total defeat. Recouping at the tower, tempers flare and the Titans are at each other’s throats while Robin tries to calm everyone down.
Caught between defying Batman’s ironclad rules and keeping his team intact, Robin does the unthinkable: he unmasks himself as Dick Grayson, sacrificing his secret identity and his relationship with Batman in order to pull his team back from the brink.
Dick Grayson Has Always Put the Needs of Others First
There is a strong argument to be made that Dick Grayson as Nightwing is the heart of the modern DC Universe. In a world that is so often filled with fallen sidekicks and vengeful proteges, Grayson is DC’s greatest success story, having been raised in the superhero world his entire life and still holding on to his empathy and compassion. With the Justice League disbanding in favor of the more compassionate team of Titans, Grayson’s joie-de-vivre and heart have landed him at the forefront of DC, essentially making the former Boy Wonder the publisher’s flagship character.
This is all to say that Grayson’s compassion and empathy towards others make him fit to lead despite his lack of superpowers. While the rest of the Teen Titans are worried about their individual strengths and weaknesses, Grayson’s top priority is how they can best function as a team; when that demands that he sacrifice his anonymity, he does so without hesitation — despite what this will mean for his relationship with Batman going forward, as his mentor had been adamant about keeping Dick’s identity a secret from the team. But he is one of the few characters who can be trusted to support his team wholeheartedly, doing his best to do what is right by them and not just the general populace.
World’s Finest: Teen Titans #5 may be quick to point out that Robin lacks any metahuman powers, but super-strength and hydrokinesis simply can’t make up for empathy, an unshakable sense of ethics, and the willingness to listen. Dick Grayson has retained these core values from boyhood to the present day, and they, alongside his willingness to sacrifice what is comfortable for what is right, have catapulted him to the forefront of DC Comics as the heroic Nightwing.
