Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and the cast of the upcoming sports drama The Iron Claw, would love to get into a real WWE ring and participate in a fight. Directed by Sean Durkin and distributed by one of the few studios allowed to promote films amid the ongoing actors’ strike, A24, The Iron Claw follows the story of the Von Erich clan, a family of wrestlers who became legends within the WWE. In addition to focusing on each of its members’ rise to becoming fighters, the film delves into the terrible tragedies that struck them, as several of the family’s children died. In fact, the only Von Erich alive today is Kevin, played by Zac Efron.
The Iron Claw has an incredible cast led by Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Maura Tierney as Doris Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, Maxwell Jacob Friedman as Lance Von Erich, and Lily James as Pam Adkisson.
To prepare for the movie, most of the actors had to train hard to be able to play wrestlers, discovering the enormous work that requires getting into the ring. In an interview with People, Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson confessed that they would accept without hesitation the opportunity to participate in a real WWE match:
Jeremy Allen White: “Oh, I would jump in.”
Harris Dickinson: I would love you. “Do you remember at the end of the shoot? We were like, ‘Should we try and do this for real?'”
Jeremy Allen White: “We went to [director Sean Durkin] and were like, ‘Sean, call them! Tell them we’re ready!'”
Zac Efron: “Yeah, call WWE! Say we’re going to do it!”

Despite the extensive training that the actors had to go through, as well as much of the film centering on the fights, The Iron Claw will focus on the empire that the Von Erichs built around their triumphs in the ring and the drama that took place outside the world of wrestling. The cast anticipates that the true value of the plot is about telling the story of what happened to the family beyond the blinding lights, and how they dealt with the darkness that surrounded them.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Efron reveals what the true core of the film is:
“It just doesn’t seem like this could all happen to one family. There’s a huge element of the movie that’s, of course, about wrestling and the showmanship aspect. But really, at its core, this movie’s an incredible story about family, love, loss, and ultimately the triumph of a man who tries to break the cycle of this crazy curse.”
