Cruise holidays are extremely popular in the UK and an excellent way to explore multiple destinations on one trip.
However, they can be expensive and if holidaymakers aren’t careful they could end up paying a huge bill for unexpected extras.
Alcohol, special dining experiences and excursions aren’t usually included in the price of a cruise so tourists will need to budget for these.
However, British tourists will also need to be very careful if they plan to use their phone while they’re away.
Jenni Fielding, cruise expert at Cruise Mummy, said: “Many of us can’t go a day without using our phones, whether making calls, sending texts, or scrolling on social media.
“However, data roaming while on a cruise can result in a very high phone bill. While at sea, your phone can’t connect to satellites it normally would, so it connects to maritime satellites instead, which costs a lot of money.
“This can be avoided by switching your phone off or putting it in flight mode to prevent apps from using data in the background.
“If, like many others, you can’t bear to be without the internet for cruise, WIFI packages are available onboard.
“These come at a cost, however, it can be much cheaper than paying for your data while roaming.
“As for calling and texting, it is advisable to use apps that allow you to do this using WIFI, such as Whatsapp and Skype to avoid extra charges.”
Cruise WIFI packages can be very expensive so if you can avoid using your phone while on the ship that’s usually the best option.
