Facts and Myths Unveiled about Hair Transplants

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hair transplants have been around for quite a long time, with the first-ever surgery occurring back in 1952. Since then, many myths about the procedure have circulated, with many people still believing that hair transplants are as they were seventy-plus years ago. That’s definitely not the case! To help lift the mystery of hair transplants, here are some facts and myths about the increasingly popular procedure.

Myth: Hair Transplants are Just for Men

Some people assume that hair transplants are only for men to combat male pattern baldness. However, this isn’t the case. Many women also reap the benefits of a hair transplant, ensuring they can enjoy long, thick locks for their whole lives. This makes sense, considering so many women experience thinning hair in their lives. Hair transplants can resolve this issue in a permanent, natural-looking way.

Truth: People of all Ages can Get Hair Transplants

It’s commonly assumed that hair transplants only work for people of a certain age and that you can’t get one when you get older. Luckily, there’s a very wide age bracket for hair transplants. If you’re between the age of 25 and 70, a hair transplant is likely feasible for you. It’s generally not considered wise for people under the age of 25 to undergo the procedure only because the result might not be as stable. If you’re over 70, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor/surgeon about the possibility of a hair transplant, as it’s not necessarily out of the question.

Myth: Hair Transplants Always Look Unnatural

It’s true that hair transplants looked unnatural in the past. From the 50s all the way to the early 2000s, plugs were the standard procedure for hair transplants and were often very noticeable. Don’t worry – times have changed. Nowadays, hair transplants are as natural as any other cosmetic surgery, leaving minimal scarring. No one needs to know!

Truth: There Are Different Kinds of Hair Transplants

When it comes to hair transplants, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of procedure. In fact, there are even different types of hair transplants to suit each individual case. The two most popular kinds are FUE and FUT, with FUT being the faster procedure and FUE being a more detailed surgery that typically produces the most natural results. When you look at how a FUE hair transplant works, you’ll see just how intricate the practice is and how the results look so natural, almost as though it’s the person’s own hair.

Myth: Hair Transplants Are Temporary

You might be worried that hair transplants require a lot of upkeep and only last a certain amount of time. While you’ll need to follow some care instructions immediately following the surgery, you won’t need another transplant in the future, as the results are permanent. Once you undergo a hair transplant, you can expect your results to last forever. So, if you get the surgery done in your 30s, you can expect luscious locks throughout your 40s, 50s, and beyond. It’s one of the many reasons why the procedure is so popular.

Truth: Results Take Time to Show Unlike wigs or hair extensions, hair transplants don’t produce permanent results instantly. In fact, at first, they cause shedding in the area where you’ve had the transplant. Over time, this results in fresh, new hair growing from the area – locks that you can absolutely call your own. It takes time, with most finished results taking up to 18 months to show. However, it’s a worthwhile investment of time for many due to the permanence of the results.
