One hidden detail in J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow depicts the key reason for how the movie came to be so authentic. Since premiering on Netflix on January 4, 2024, Society of the Snow has remained one of the most popular and widely discussed movies on the giant streaming platform. The film brilliantly captures many of the real-life events and sentiments of the people who were actually directly involved in the 1972 Andres plane crash and was informed by hours of firsthand interviews with the survivors conducted by Bayona and his production team.
Society of the Snow is Spain’s official submission to the 2024 Academy Award for Best International Feature. The film features several cameos from the real-life survivors and relatives of the deceased who briefly appear on screen throughout Society of the Snow. Despite sharing the same premise as the 1993 Frank Marshall film Alive starring Ethan Hawke, Society of the Snow is evidently much more focused on capturing the heroic and sacrificial events pertaining to the true story as evidenced by key details such as the fully South American cast and the involvement of the survivors and families of the deceased.

The Luggage That Zerbino Wouldn’t Leave Without Contained The Letters & Mementos From The Deceased
A key moment of Society of the Snow is when one of the survivors Gustavo Zerbino refuses to be rescued without bringing along a suitcase at the end of the film. Zerbino had been collecting keepsakes and letters from the deceased throughout their 70-day period out in the Andes and, as the film portrays, would not leave the site without the emblems of those who were lost. Two of the deceased, Coco and Arturo’s letters, in particular, were salvaged in this suitcase, which in turn added so much realism to Society of the Snow.
Zerbino’s refusal to leave without the letters and mementos from the deceased ultimately helped preserve the keepsakes a lot better than they would have otherwise. Because of Zerbino’s great efforts, these keepsakes were even on display at the Andes Museum along with articles of clothing and other actual artifacts from the crash site. We see Zerbino collecting objects that belonged to the deceased throughout the movie, but it’s not entirely clear that they were all stuffed into this one suitcase that he refused to leave without.
Numa Turcatti didn’t actually write letters to his family that were salvaged as the movie implies.

The Salvaged Letters Are Important For Understanding The Victims’ Perspectives In Society Of The Snow
The letters that Zerbino helped preserve are hugely informative of the actual experience of the survivors and the deceased portrayed in Society of the Snow. A great deal of valuable information is able to be accessed from the survivors’ recollections of the dead and interviews with their families, but having letters that they wrote themselves on the mountain was absolutely crucial to recreating the spirit of the film.
