Death And Other Details Interview: Showrunners On Creating Consistency In Their Murder Mystery
Screen Rant interviews Heidi Cole McAdams and Mike Weiss about ensuring that the clues in Hulu’s Death and Other Details are fair to the audience.
12 Viktor Sams Has Been Operating On The SS Verona For Years
Sunil has to be part of the operation
Death and Other Details episode 5 ended with Rufus, Leila, and Teddy discovering Viktor Sams’ hideout on the ship’s lower deck. With the cliffhanger ending, what his operation looked like wasn’t revealed until Death and Other Details episode 6 and was much larger than viewers could have anticipated. Viktor Sams had lined the area with servers spanning a long hallway to secretly keep surveillance on everyone.
Leila and Teddy were able to figure out that Viktor Sams had been working on the ship for years based on where it had traveled and what Leila knew about his whereabouts from the investigating she’d done before her accident. Due to the scale of the hideout and the length of time he’d been on board, Rufus deduced that Sunil had to know what had been built in his ship years before they climbed aboard. This meant that Sunil must have worked with Viktor Sams in some capacity.
11 Winnie Didn’t Know Danny’s True Identity
She believed she killed Keith Trubitsky
While in their cells on the ship in Death and Other Details episode 6, Winnie tried to recruit Jules to work with her for Viktor Sams. She told him that she was “part of something bigger than any one of us,” and that they were going to “reset the scales” and “get even with the people who have been above the law for far too long.” Jules rejected her offer, asking her how killing Rufus Cotesworth’s assistant makes the world a better place.
Winnie, like the others on the ship prior to his death, believed that Danny was actually millionaire Keith Trubitsky. When she was given orders to kill him, she was not told his true identity. Viktor Sams most likely killed Danny as part of his agenda to keep himself from being exposed. By getting Winnie to kill him, he tricked her into believing she was working for a greater cause and let her take the fall.
10 Sunil Was Spying For Viktor Sams
He told him he wouldn’t do it any longer
After talking with Rufus about his discovery, Imogene confronted Sunil about Viktor Sams in Death and Other Details episode 6. She felt betrayed as they’d just started to explore a romantic relationship and in his guilt, he confessed everything to Rufus and Imogene. Sunil had been unable to fund his ship until Viktor Sams stepped in and helped him five or six years before the present storyline in Death and Other Details.
He never met Viktor Sams, as he had been recruited by an asset manager from Zurich named Andreas Windler. In exchange for helping him financially, Viktor Sams was allowed to renovate the ship to build his operation. Sunil claimed he didn’t know what Viktor Sams did until he asked him to be a spy on their current voyage. When Imogene told Sunil about Viktor Sams’ involvement in her mother’s death, he told Viktor Sams he didn’t want to be a spy any longer, only for him to send Andreas to follow him and Imogene in Italy.
9 Sunil Helped Kill Danny
He kept Viktor Sams informed about the investigation
In addition to being a spy, Sunil helped Viktor Sams cover up Danny’s murder and his involvement in it. Viktor Sams called him after he discovered Danny’s body and told him to keep him informed on the investigation. Sunil told Rufus and Imogene in Death and Other Details episode 6 that he stopped sharing information with Viktor Sams when he found out about Imogene’s mother, but the damage was already done.
8 Anna Wants To Get Leila Back
She wasn’t going to tell her about Eleanor
After Lawrence went against Anna’s wishes and gave 51% of the company to the Chuns, she and Tripp drank away their sorrows and frustrations. Anna told Tripp that Leila had asked for a divorce and she’d cheated on her wife with Eleanor. Anna also said that she wants Leila back but doesn’t plan to tell Leila about her infidelity. Tripp advised his sister to try and fight for her marriage, but she didn’t have the chance to do so in Death and Other Details episode 6.
7 Alexandra Tried To Give Hilde Information On Lawrence Collier
The evidence was gone
In Death and Other Details episode 5, it was revealed that Alexandra had documents in her hotel room to file a lawsuit against the Colliers. In Death and Other Details episode 6, she brought the evidence to Hilde, claiming she had information that could send Lawrence Collier to prison for the rest of his life. She asked for full immunity, suggesting that she’d done something illegal as well. Unfortunately, when the governor gave the file to Hilde, it was full of blank pages, meaning someone had stolen the real evidence from her room.
6 Alexandra Died In Death And Other Details Episode 6
She was poisoned
Immediately after giving Hilde the file, Alexandra started coughing. This wouldn’t have been out of the ordinary as she’d had a cough throughout Death and Other Details, but this time she was coughing up blood. Alexandra died almost instantly, her information about Lawrence Collier potentially dying with her. Tripp accused Llewellyn of killing her as he knew that Alexandra had gone to speak with him in Death and Other Details episode 5 about potentially blackmailing her.
Imogene and Rufus figured out that Alexandra had been poisoned, but not the day she died. When they saw a rash on her arm, they figured out that the vitamin drips she’d been offered by the pool had been tampered with and were slowly poisoning her over the course of three days. When they talked to Winnie about it, she said that she’d received orders to mess with the IV drip. However, when Anna apologized to Llewellyn for Tripp’s accusation, he said, “he wasn’t wrong,” which could mean another connection with Viktor Sams.
5 Leila Hacked Into Viktor Sams’ Server
She found a video of Anna cheating on her
After helping discover Viktor Sams’ lair, Leila spent Death and Other Details episode 6 hacking into his servers, revealing even more of her investigative skills. She eventually found files on everyone on the ship, with video and picture evidence of his surveillance. While looking through the files, she found footage of Anna cheating on her with Eleanor. This likely dashes any hope Anna had of convincing Leila to stay with her in Death and Other Details.
4 Sunil’s Friend Was Able To Date The Document From Collier Mills
They were using a carcinogenic material
In Death and Other Details episode 6, Sunil’s friend called and said that the Colliers’ shipping receipt Imogene had found was from 2005, meaning they had knowingly poisoned their customers. Winnie had told them Viktor Sands recruited her to help her get revenge after her friend died from being poisoned while working in the factory. Imogene confronted Anna and found out that she was already aware of what had been done. However, she claimed that when she found out, she rebuilt the factory from scratch, which is why the Colliers were bankrupted.
Despite covering up her family’s wrongdoings, Anna didn’t appear to know what Imogene was talking about when she accused her of paying blackmail to Viktor Sams. Imogene called her a criminal and Anna revealed that she knew that Imogene was stealing from the company. She said she hadn’t said anything before because she felt bad for her, but their argument was surely the end of their lifelong friendship.
3 There Was A Blackout On The Ship
Viktor Sams was watching them
Just when Leila was about to show Teddy the folder Viktor Sams had on Winnie in Death and Other Details episode 6, the lights went out. There was a total blackout on the ship orchestrated by Viktor Sams himself, who had been watching them and knew they were getting close to finding out his identity. Though the blackout interrupted their progress, Viktor Sams stepping in is a good sign that they’re on the right path.
2 Llewellyn Jumped Overboard
He revealed he was in love with Imogene’s mom
When the blackout occurred in Death and Other Details episode 6, Imogene and Rufus heard screams and headed to the ship’s deck where Llewellyn was standing on the railing. They tried to talk him off the edge, Imogene asking if it was about what she’d found out about Collier Mills and Rufus asking about Viktor Sams. In his final moments before jumping overboard, Llewellyn confessed that he had loved Imogene’s mother and called Rufus a hack who couldn’t put together what was staring him in the face.
1 Rufus Wasn’t The World’s Greatest Detective
He lied about the case that made him famous
Death and Other Details episode 6 finally revealed how Rufus earned himself the title “the world’s greatest detective.” He was given the name by a talk show host after telling the story about how he recovered a famous stolen necklace nobody else could find. Rufus claimed that he’d conducted an investigation and discovered a detail that everyone overlooked. In reality, the thief had simply given him the stolen necklace after he beat him in a poker game.
From there, Rufus bluffed his way through every case until he couldn’t anymore. The case of Imogene’s mother stumped him and revealed he wasn’t what he’d been built up to be, and the Colliers knew it. Imogene called him a fraud and demanded to know every detail of his investigation into her mother’s death so she could figure out what Llewellyn said he missed. Rufus told Imogene he wouldn’t like her much when they were done, teasing another falling out between them in Death and Other Details.
