Comic icon Adam Sandler will be honored with the People’s Icon Award at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards. Thanks to his decade-spanning work in the comedy genre, beginning with Saturday Night Live back in the early 90s, and his roles in the likes of such hits as Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Waterboy, the Grown Ups franchise, and many more, Sandler has become “a fixture in the industry,” according to Jen Neal, NBCUniversal Entertainment executive of live events and specials, who released the following statement regarding Sandler receiving the People’s Icon Award.
“Adam Sandler has been a fixture in the industry for decades, entertaining us since he got his start on Saturday Night Live more than 30 years ago. From Billy Madison to Mr. Deeds, his unforgettable characters have endured the test of time and left their mark on audiences for generations. We’re excited to honor him with this year’s People’s Icon Award.”
As well as becoming known for his work in comedy, Sandler has also tackled more dramatic roles over the years, with the actor often delivering critically acclaimed performances when he does so. His work in the likes of Punch-Drunk Love, The Meyerowitz Stories, Hustle, Funny People, and 2019’s crime thriller Uncut Gems have seen Sandler showered with praise, with the actor often being among the names up for Oscar consideration (though, as yet, he has never been nominated despite rave reviews).
Other recipients of the People’s Icon Award include Ryan Reynolds, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston and Melissa McCarthy, with Lenny Kravitz due to receive this year’s Music Icon Award.
The 2024 People’s Choice Awards is due to air on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 8 PM. ET/PT on NBC, Peacock, and E!
