In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, Black Adam and Marmalade star Aldis Hodge, the actor has revealed some of his favorite performances from last year, and heaps praise on his former co-star Danielle Brooks and The Bear star Ayo Edebiri. Hodge was promoting the film Marmalade and spoke about his favorite performances of 2023, and could not help but shoutout to his Clemency co-star Danielle Brooks, who has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Color Purple.
“I’m gonna give a shoutout to Danielle Brooks all day. We did Clemency together, and I’m very proud of her. I’m very happy. She’s well-deserving, and I really hope she gets up there and knocks it down. I wish that love could have spread through to Taraji. She did a great job. Fantasia, she was amazing, but [being snubbed] doesn’t take anything away from the fact that they are incredible, gifted artists. They are monsters at their craft.”
Hodge starred alongside Brooks in the 2019 drama, Clemency, which follows the lives of prison warden Bernadine Williams, played by Andre Woodard, and death row inmate Anthony Woods, portrayed by Hodge. The drama was met with critical acclaim, winning the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
Turning to the small screen, Hodge heaped praise on Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri for her performance in the FX series The Bear.
“Ayo Edebiri is incredible. She is literally the spitting image of my sister, which is probably why I’m looking at her, like, ‘I’m literally watching my sister.’ But I think she’s incredible. I’m really happy for all the success and accolades that have come her way. I don’t know her, but very proud of her.”

Marmalade Will Land in Theaters and on Demand From Tomorrow
Aldis Hodge will next star in Marmalade, an edge-of-the-seat crime-tinged romance tale. Recently incarcerated Baron (Joe Keery) strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Camila Morrone), the love of his life, and their “Bonnie and Clyde” style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they’ve always dreamed of.
Hodge is also set to star in Parallel, a science fiction thriller that he wrote alongside his brother Edwin and Jonathan Keasey. Directed by Kourosh Ahari, Parallel follows Danielle Deadwyler as Vanessa, a grief-stricken woman who mysteriously finds herself navigating between parallel spaces. The project is a remake of the Chinese movie Parallel Forest by Lei Zheng, which was released back in 2019.
Marmalade will be released in theaters and on demand on February 9, 2024, with Parallel scheduled to be released by Vertical Entertainment on February 23, 2024.
