Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told (Limited Series)
Stream on Mar. 21
Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is a documentary series about the rise and unfortunate fall of an Atlanta HBCU picnic that expanded into an annual festival and street party highlighting Atlanta as a major cultural hub for the Black community. Conceived in March 1982, the event garnered its name from the meshing of the words freaky and picnic and was inspired by the song “Le Freak” by Chic.
As the event outgrew its initial concept and a heightened police presence began to infiltrate the celebration, support for the event dwindled, and the event was eventually banned in the late ’90s. The height of Freaknik hit the ceiling in 1994 and 1995, which the documentary will most definitely explore as it discusses the peaks and valleys of the prolific party popular culture seemingly forgot about. Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is streaming on Hulu on Mar. 21.
