James Cameron Confirms Avatar 6 & 7 Ideas, Comments On Whether He’d Direct

Summary

  • James Cameron confirms ideas for potential sixth and seventh Avatar movies, expanding the universe of Pandora.
  • Cameron is unlikely to direct the future installments, but the franchise has the potential to stand the test of time.
  • The world of Pandora offers endless possibilities for new and exciting elements to explore in future Avatar films.

Avatar director James Cameron confirms he has ideas for a potential sixth and seventh movie. As production is still ongoing on the confirmed Avatar sequels, which are planned for 2025, 2029, and 2031, Cameron keeps finding new ways to expand the universe of Pandora. This comes after the massive success of the first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which became the first film in the COVID-19 era to cross $2 billion worldwide.

Speaking with People, Cameron reveals that he has ideas for more installments of the Avatar franchise. However, should they happen, it is unlikely he will be directing them. So far, Avatar 5 is the last confirmed movie to come in the series. Check out what he said on the matter below:

We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point. I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.

The Avatar Franchise Has The Potential To Be Neverending

While it is unclear which direction the Avatar sequels will take, it’s clear that the world of Pandora is meant to be explored much further than Cameron’s additional three chapters. After Disney acquired the libraries of 20th Century Fox and turned the world of Pandora into an Animal Kingdom attraction, the original film’s timelessness was further solidified by the sequel’s release, which shattered box office expectations. As such, the Avatar franchise has the potential to stand the test of time and become something that gets frequently re-explored.

Following the unimaginable success of the first Avatar installment, Avatar: The Way of Water compelled an inspiring amount of profit for the franchise

Whether Cameron directs those future installments or chooses to pass the baton, the world of Pandora is filled with so much imagination that there always seems to be new and exciting things to explore with each movie. Currently, details of the upcoming films are kept mum. However, the possibility of a fire Na’vi clan appearing in Avatar 3, after the Metkayina tribe was one of the main points of focus of Avatar: The Way of Water, should hint at how endless the possibilities are for each title to bring something new to the table.

Should an Avatar 6 and 7 happen, they would likely be quite welcome. While it’s unclear if the three confirmed sequels will be successful critically and commercially, one would certainly be prudent not to bet against Cameron, who has consistently defied all odds. While the next chapter of the Avatar franchise has been delayed many times, all signs are so far suggesting it will be worth the wait.

The first two Avatar movies are available to stream on Disney+.
